The Soldiers Mock Jesus(A)

19 So then (B)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. [a]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they (C)struck Him with their hands.

Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, (D)that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”

Pilate’s Decision

Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”

(E)Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!

Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”

The Jews answered him, (F)“We have a law, and according to [b]our law He ought to die, because (G)He made Himself the Son of God.”

Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” (H)But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have [c]power to crucify You, and power to release You?”

11 Jesus answered, (I)“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (J)the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”

12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. (K)Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

13 (L)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now (M)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”

15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”

Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”

The chief priests answered, (N)“We have no king but Caesar!”

16 (O)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus [d]and led Him away.

The King on a Cross(P)

17 (Q)And He, bearing His cross, (R)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and (S)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 (T)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 (U)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

(V)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”

Therefore the soldiers did these things.

Behold Your Mother

25 (W)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (X)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (Y)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (Z)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (AA)to his own home.

It Is Finished

28 After this, Jesus, [e]knowing that all things were now accomplished, (AB)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and (AC)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (AD)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31 (AE)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, (AF)that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a (AG)high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (AH)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is (AI)true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may (AJ)believe. 36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, (AK)“Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (AL)“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”

Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(AM)

38 (AN)After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, (AO)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And (AP)Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of (AQ)myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and (AR)bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So (AS)there they laid Jesus, (AT)because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

The Empty Tomb(AU)

20 Now the (AV)first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the (AW)stone had been taken away from the tomb. Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the (AX)other disciple, (AY)whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

(AZ)Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw (BA)the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and (BB)the [f]handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the (BC)other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not [g]know the (BD)Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord

11 (BE)But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

14 (BF)Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and (BG)did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

16 Jesus said to her, (BH)“Mary!”

She turned and said to [h]Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).

17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet (BI)ascended to My Father; but go to (BJ)My brethren and say to them, (BK)‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to (BL)My God and your God.’ ”

18 (BM)Mary Magdalene came and told the [i]disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

The Apostles Commissioned(BN)

19 (BO)Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were [j]assembled, for (BP)fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, (BQ)“Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He (BR)showed them His hands and His side. (BS)Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! (BT)As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (BU)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Seeing and Believing

24 Now Thomas, (BV)called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and (BW)reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be (BX)unbelieving, but believing.”

28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, [k]“Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. (BY)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

That You May Believe

30 And (BZ)truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 (CA)but these are written that (CB)you may believe that Jesus (CC)is the Christ, the Son of God, (CD)and that believing you may have life in His name.

Breakfast by the Sea

21 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the (CE)Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, (CF)Thomas called the Twin, (CG)Nathanael of (CH)Cana in Galilee, (CI)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”

They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and [l]immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples (CJ)did not know that it was Jesus. Then (CK)Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”

They answered Him, “No.”

And He said to them, (CL)“Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

Therefore (CM)that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”

11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, (CN)“Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

14 This is now (CO)the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus Restores Peter

15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of [m]Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [n]love You.”

He said to him, (CP)“Feed My lambs.”

16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of [o]Jonah, do you love Me?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [p]love You.”

(CQ)He said to him, “Tend My (CR)sheep.”

17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of [q]Jonah, do you [r]love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”

And he said to Him, “Lord, (CS)You know all things; You know that I love You.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 18 (CT)Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying (CU)by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, (CV)“Follow Me.”

The Beloved Disciple and His Book

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple (CW)whom Jesus loved following, (CX)who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”

22 Jesus said to him, “If I [s]will that he remain (CY)till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who (CZ)testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

25 (DA)And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, (DB)I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

Prologue

The former account I made, O (DC)Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, (DD)until the day in which [t]He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit (DE)had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, (DF)to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many [u]infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

The Holy Spirit Promised

(DG)And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have (DH)heard from Me; (DI)for John truly baptized with water, (DJ)but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them, (DK)“It is not for you to (DL)know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. (DM)But you shall receive power (DN)when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and (DO)you shall be [v]witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and (DP)Samaria, and to the (DQ)end of the earth.”

Jesus Ascends to Heaven(DR)

(DS)Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, (DT)He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them (DU)in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, (DV)will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

The Upper Room Prayer Meeting

12 (DW)Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up (DX)into the upper room where they were staying: (DY)Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and (DZ)Simon the Zealot; and (EA)Judas the son of James. 14 (EB)These all continued with one [w]accord in prayer [x]and supplication, with (EC)the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with (ED)His brothers.

Matthias Chosen(EE)

15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the [y]disciples (altogether the number (EF)of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, 16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, (EG)which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, (EH)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; 17 for (EI)he was numbered with us and obtained a part in (EJ)this ministry.”

18 (EK)(Now this man purchased a field with (EL)the [z]wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his [aa]entrails gushed out. 19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms:

(EM)‘Let his dwelling place be [ab]desolate,
And let no one live in it’;

and,

(EN)‘Let another take his [ac]office.’

21 “Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John to that day when (EO)He was taken up from us, one of these must (EP)become a witness with us of His resurrection.”

23 And they proposed two: Joseph called (EQ)Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, (ER)who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25 (ES)to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” 26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Coming of the Holy Spirit

When (ET)the Day of Pentecost had fully come, (EU)they were all [ad]with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and (EV)it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them [ae]divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And (EW)they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began (EX)to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Crowd’s Response

And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, (EY)devout men, from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the (EZ)multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak (FA)Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own [af]language in which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and (FB)Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and [ag]Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”

13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”

Peter’s Sermon(FC)

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, (FD)since it is only [ah]the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 ‘And(FE) it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
(FF)That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and (FG)your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.
18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days;
(FH)And they shall prophesy.
19 (FI)I will show wonders in heaven above
And signs in the earth beneath:
Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.
20 (FJ)The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
21 And it shall come to pass
That (FK)whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.’

22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you (FL)by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know— 23 Him, (FM)being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, (FN)you [ai]have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 (FO)whom God raised up, having [aj]loosed the [ak]pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning Him:

(FP)‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face,
For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad;
Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.
27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see (FQ)corruption.
28 You have made known to me the ways of life;
You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’

29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you (FR)of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, (FS)and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, [al]according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, (FT)that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 (FU)This Jesus God has raised up, (FV)of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore (FW)being exalted [am]to (FX)the right hand of God, and (FY)having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He (FZ)poured out this which you now see and hear.

34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:

(GA)‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’

36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

37 Now when they heard this, (GB)they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

38 Then Peter said to them, (GC)“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the [an]remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and (GD)to your children, and (GE)to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

A Vital Church Grows

40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this [ao]perverse generation.” 41 Then those who [ap]gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 (GF)And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ [aq]doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and (GG)many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and (GH)had all things in common, 45 and [ar]sold their possessions and goods, and (GI)divided[as] them among all, as anyone had need.

46 (GJ)So continuing daily with one accord (GK)in the temple, and (GL)breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And (GM)the Lord added [at]to the church daily those who were being saved.
