Jesus Flogged and Mocked

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged. ² The soldiers also twisted together a crown^(A) of thorns, put it on His head, and threw a purple robe around Him. ³ And they repeatedly came up to Him^(B) and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and were slapping His face.

⁴ Pilate went outside again and said to them, “Look, I’m bringing Him outside to you to let you know I find no grounds^(C) for charging Him.”

Pilate Sentences Jesus to Death

⁵ Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.^(D) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”^(E)

⁶ When the chief priests and the temple police saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

Pilate responded, “Take Him and crucify Him yourselves, for I find no grounds for charging Him.”

⁷ “We have a law,” the Jews replied to him, “and according to that law He must die,^(F) because He made Himself^[a] the Son of God.”^(G)

⁸ When Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid than ever. ⁹ He went back into the headquarters^(H) and asked Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus did not give him an answer.^{(I) 10} So Pilate said to Him, “You’re not talking to me? Don’t You know that I have the authority to release You and the authority to crucify You?”

¹¹ “You would have no authority over Me at all,” Jesus answered him, “if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed Me over to you has the greater sin.”^[b](J)

¹² From that moment Pilate made every effort^[c] to release Him. But the Jews shouted, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar!”

¹³ When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside. He sat down on the judge’s bench in a place called the Stone Pavement (but in Hebrew Gabbatha). ¹⁴ It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about six in the morning.^[d] Then he told the Jews, “Here is your king!”

¹⁵ But they shouted, “Take Him away! Take Him away! Crucify Him!”

Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king?”

“We have no king but Caesar!” the chief priests answered.

¹⁶ So then, because of them, he handed Him over to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

Therefore they took Jesus away.^{[e] 17} Carrying^(K) His own cross,^(L) He went out to what is called Skull Place, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. ¹⁸ There they crucified Him and two others with Him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle. ¹⁹ Pilate also had a sign lettered and put on the cross. The inscription was:

²⁰ Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,^(M) and it was written in Hebrew,^[f] Latin, and Greek. ²¹ So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’^(N) but that He said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’”

²² Pilate replied, “What I have written, I have written.”

²³ When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took His clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. ²⁴ So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” They did this to fulfill^(O) the Scripture^(P) that says: They divided My clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for My clothing.^(Q)[g] And this is what the soldiers did.

Jesus’ Provision for His Mother

²⁵ Standing^(R) by the cross^(S) of Jesus were His mother,^(T) His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.^{(U) 26} When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple He loved^(V) standing there, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.” ²⁷ Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

The Finished Work of Jesus

²⁸ After^(W) this, when Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished^(X) that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said, “I’m thirsty!”^{(Y) 29} A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on hyssop^[h](Z) and held it up to His mouth.

³⁰ When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!”^(AA) Then bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.^(AB)

Jesus’ Side Pierced

³¹ Since it was the preparation day,^(AC) the Jews did not want the bodies^(AD) to remain on the cross^(AE) on the Sabbath^(AF) (for that Sabbath was a special^[i] day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away.^{(AG) 32} So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him. ³³ When they came to Jesus, they did not break His legs since they saw that He was already dead.^{(AH) 34} But one of the soldiers pierced^(AI) His side^(AJ) with a spear, and at once blood and water^(AK) came out. ³⁵ He who saw this has testified^(AL) so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth.^{(AM) 36} For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled:^(AN) Not one of His bones will be broken.^{(AO)[j] 37} Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the One they pierced.^(AP)[k]

Jesus’ Burial

³⁸ After^(AQ) this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus—but secretly because of his fear of the Jews—asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus’ body.^(AR) Pilate gave him permission, so he came and took His body away. ³⁹ Nicodemus^(AS) (who had previously come to Him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about 75 pounds^[l] of myrrh and aloes. ⁴⁰ Then they took Jesus’ body^(AT) and wrapped it in linen cloths^(AU) with the aromatic spices, according to the burial^(AV) custom of the Jews. ⁴¹ There was a garden in the place where He was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it. ⁴² They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation and since the tomb was nearby.

The Empty Tomb

20 On^(AW) the first day of the week^(AX) Mary Magdalene^(AY) came to the tomb^(AZ) early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone^(BA) had been removed^[m] from the tomb. ² So she ran to Simon Peter^(BB) and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,^(BC) and we don’t know where they have put Him!”

³ At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb. ⁴ The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first. ⁵ Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths^(BD) lying there, yet he did not go in. ⁶ Then, following him, Simon Peter came also. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there. ⁷ The wrapping^(BE) that had been on His head was not lying with the linen cloths^(BF) but was folded up in a separate place by itself. ⁸ The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then entered the tomb, saw, and believed. ⁹ For they still did not understand the Scripture^(BG) that He must rise^(BH) from the dead.^{(BI) 10} Then the disciples went home again.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord

¹¹ But^(BJ) Mary stood outside facing the tomb,^(BK) crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb. ¹² She saw two angels^(BL) in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where Jesus’ body^(BM) had been lying. ¹³ They said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?”

“Because they’ve taken away my Lord,”^(BN) she told them, “and I don’t know where they’ve put Him.” ¹⁴ Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not know it was Jesus.^(BO)

¹⁵ “Woman,” Jesus said to her, “why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”

Supposing He was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve removed Him, tell me where you’ve put Him, and I will take Him away.”

¹⁶ Jesus said, “Mary.”

Turning around, she said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!”^[n]—which means “Teacher.”^(BP)

¹⁷ “Don’t cling to Me,” Jesus told her, “for I have not yet ascended^(BQ) to the Father.^(BR) But go to My brothers^(BS) and tell them that I am ascending to My Father^(BT) and your Father—to My God^(BU) and your God.”

¹⁸ Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!”^(BV) And she told them what^[o] He had said to her.

The Disciples Commissioned

¹⁹ In the evening of that first day of the week,^(BW) the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because of their fear of the Jews. Then Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!”^(BX)

²⁰ Having said this, He showed them His hands and His side.^(BY) So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

²¹ Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me,^(BZ) I also send you.”^{(CA) 22} After saying this, He breathed on them^(CB) and said,^[p] “Receive the Holy Spirit.^{(CC) 23} If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”^(CD)

Thomas Sees and Believes

²⁴ But one of the Twelve, Thomas^(CE) (called “Twin”), was not with them when Jesus came. ²⁵ So the other disciples kept telling him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in His hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails,^(CF) and put my hand into His side,^(CG) I will never believe!”^(CH)

²⁶ After eight days His disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, “Peace to you!”

²⁷ Then He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and observe My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Don’t be an unbeliever, but a believer.”^(CI)

²⁸ Thomas responded to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

²⁹ Jesus said, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed.^[q] Those who believe without seeing^(CJ) are blessed.”

The Purpose of This Gospel

³⁰ Jesus performed many other signs^(CK) in the presence of His disciples that are not written^(CL) in this book.^{(CM) 31} But these are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah,^(CN) the Son^(CO) of God,^[r](CP) and by believing you may have life in His name.^(CQ)

Jesus’ Third Appearance to the Disciples

21 After this, Jesus revealed^(CR) Himself again to His disciples by the Sea of Tiberias.^[s](CS) He revealed Himself in this way:

² Simon Peter,^(CT) Thomas^(CU) (called “Twin”), Nathanael^(CV) from Cana of Galilee,^(CW) Zebedee’s^(CX) sons, and two others of His disciples were together.

³ “I’m going fishing,” Simon Peter said to them.

“We’re coming with you,” they told him. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.^(CY)

⁴ When daybreak came, Jesus stood on the shore. However, the disciples did not know it was Jesus.^(CZ)

⁵ “Men,”^[t] Jesus called to them, “you don’t have any fish, do you?”

“No,” they answered.

⁶ “Cast the net on the right side of the boat,” He told them, “and you’ll find some.” So they did,^[u] and they were unable to haul it in because of the large number of fish. ⁷ Therefore the disciple, the one Jesus loved, said to Peter, “It is the Lord!”^(DA)

When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied his outer garment around him^[v] (for he was stripped) and plunged into the sea. ⁸ But since they were not far from land (about 100 yards^[w](DB) away), the other disciples came in the boat,^(DC) dragging the net full of fish. ⁹ When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread.

¹⁰ “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus told them. ¹¹ So Simon Peter got up and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish—153 of them. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.^(DD)

¹² “Come and have breakfast,” Jesus told them. None of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?” because they knew it was the Lord. ¹³ Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish.

¹⁴ This was now the third time^[x](DE) Jesus appeared^[y](DF) to the disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus’ Threefold Restoration of Peter

¹⁵ When they had eaten breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John,^[z] do you love^[aa] Me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said to Him, “You know that I love You.”

“Feed^(DG) My lambs,”^(DH) He told him.

¹⁶ A second time He asked him, “Simon, son of John, do you love^(DI) Me?”^(DJ)

“Yes, Lord,” he said to Him, “You know that I love You.”

“Shepherd^(DK) My sheep,”^(DL) He told him.

¹⁷ He asked him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love^(DM) Me?”

Peter was grieved^(DN) that He asked him the third time, “Do you love Me?” He said, “Lord, You know everything!^(DO) You know that I love You.”

“Feed^(DP) My sheep,” Jesus said. ¹⁸ “I assure you:^(DQ) When you were young, you would tie your belt and walk wherever you wanted. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will tie you and carry you where you don’t want to go.” ¹⁹ He said this to signify by what kind of death^(DR) he would glorify God.^[ab](DS) After saying this, He told him, “Follow Me!”^(DT)

Correcting a False Report

²⁰ So Peter turned around and saw the disciple Jesus loved^(DU) following them. That disciple was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and asked, “Lord, who is the one that’s going to betray You?”^{(DV) 21} When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord—what about him?”

²² “If I want him to remain until I come,”^(DW) Jesus answered, “what is that to you? As for you, follow Me.”

²³ So this report^[ac] spread to the brothers^[ad](DX) that this disciple would not die.^(DY) Yet Jesus did not tell him that he would not die, but, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?”

Epilogue

²⁴ This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.

²⁵ And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which, if they were written one by one, I suppose not even the world itself could contain the books^[ae] that would be written.^(DZ)
