⁷ The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,^(A) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”^(B)

¹⁸ For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;^(A) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.^(B)

¹⁶ anyone who blasphemes^(A) the name of the Lord is to be put to death.^(B) The entire assembly must stone them. Whether foreigner or native-born, when they blaspheme the Name they are to be put to death.

⁴ and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power^[a](A) by his resurrection from the dead:^(B) Jesus Christ our Lord.^(C)

⁶³ But Jesus remained silent.^(A)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath^(B) by the living God:^(C) Tell us if you are the Messiah,^(D) the Son of God.”^(E)

⁶⁴ “You have said so,”^(F) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One^(G) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”^[a](H)

⁶⁵ Then the high priest tore his clothes^(I) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. ⁶⁶ What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”^(J) they answered.

³⁶ what about the one whom the Father set apart^(A) as his very own^(B) and sent into the world?^(C) Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?^{(D) 37} Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.^{(E) 38} But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”^(F)

³⁰ I and the Father are one.”^(A)

³¹ Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him,^{(B) 32} but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”

³³ “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”^(C)

³⁹ And when the centurion,^(A) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,^[a] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”^(B)

⁶¹ But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.^(A)

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”^(B)

⁶² “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”^(C)

⁶³ The high priest tore his clothes.^(D) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. ⁶⁴ “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.^(E)
