John 19:4-17
New International Version
4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out(A) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”(B) 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,(C) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”
But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(D) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(E)
7 The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(F) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(G)
8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace.(H) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(I) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(J) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(K) is guilty of a greater sin.”
12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(L) opposes Caesar.”
13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(M) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(N) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(O) of the Passover; it was about noon.(P)
“Here is your king,”(Q) Pilate said to the Jews.
15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”
“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.
“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(R)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(S)
So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross,(T) he went out to the place of the Skull(U) (which in Aramaic(V) is called Golgotha).
Matthew 27:24-32
New International Version
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar(A) was starting, he took water and washed his hands(B) in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,”(C) he said. “It is your responsibility!”(D)
25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”(E)
26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged,(F) and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(G)
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium(H) and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,(I) 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.(J) 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.(K) 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.(L)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(M)
32 As they were going out,(N) they met a man from Cyrene,(O) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(P)
