Care of the Body of Jesus

31 Now then, since it was (A)the day of preparation, to prevent (B)the bodies from remaining on the cross on the Sabbath ([a]for that Sabbath was a (C)high day), the Jews requested of Pilate that their legs be broken, and the bodies be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other who was (D)crucified with Him; 33 but after they came to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 Yet one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (E)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has (F)testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place (G)so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “(H)Not a bone of Him shall be [b]broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “(I)They will look at Him whom they pierced.”

38 Now (J)after these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a (K)secret one for (L)fear of the [c]Jews, requested of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39 (M)Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, (N)bringing a [d]mixture of (O)myrrh and aloes, about a [e](P)hundred litras weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and (Q)bound it in (R)linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden was a (S)new tomb (T)in which no one had yet been laid.

Care of the Body of Jesus

31 Since it was the day of Preparation [for the Sabbath], in order to prevent the bodies from hanging on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high holy day) the Jews asked Pilate to have their legs [a]broken [to hasten death] and the bodies taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other who had been crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came [flowing] out. 35 And he (John, the eyewitness) who has seen it has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also [who read this] may believe. 36 For these things took place to fulfill the Scripture, “Not a bone of His shall be broken.”(A) 37 And again another Scripture says, “They shall look at Him whom they have pierced.”(B)

38 And after this, Joseph of Arimathea—a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews—asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away His body.(C) 39 Nicodemus, who had first come to Him at night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, [weighing] about a hundred [Roman] [b]pounds. 40 So they took Jesus’ body and bound it in linen wrappings with the fragrant spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now there was a garden at the place where He was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb [cut out of solid rock] in which no one had yet been laid.

  1. John 19:31 After the legs were broken with a heavy blow, the condemned prisoner could no longer push upwards to assist his own breathing and would soon suffocate due to the awkward position that was forced on him by crucifixion. At the same time, breaking the legs was more painful than a quicker end with the point of a spear.

Jesus' Side Is Pierced

31 Since it was (A)the day of Preparation, and (B)so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was (C)a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other (D)who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out (E)blood and water. 35 (F)He who saw it has borne witness—(G)his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—(H)that you also may believe. 36 (I)For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: (J)“Not one of his bones (K)will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (L)“They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

Jesus Is Buried

38 (M)After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly (N)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 (O)Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus[a] by night, came (P)bringing a mixture of (Q)myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds[b] in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and (R)bound it in (S)linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a (T)garden, and (U)in the garden a new tomb (V)in which no one had yet been laid.

31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
