Care of the Body of Jesus

31 Now then, since it was (A)the day of preparation, to prevent (B)the bodies from remaining on the cross on the Sabbath ([a]for that Sabbath was a (C)high day), the Jews requested of Pilate that their legs be broken, and the bodies be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other who was (D)crucified with Him; 33 but after they came to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 Yet one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (E)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has (F)testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place (G)so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “(H)Not a bone of Him shall be [b]broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “(I)They will look at Him whom they pierced.”

38 Now (J)after these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a (K)secret one for (L)fear of the [c]Jews, requested of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39 (M)Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, (N)bringing a [d]mixture of (O)myrrh and aloes, about a [e](P)hundred litras weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and (Q)bound it in (R)linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden was a (S)new tomb (T)in which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of (U)preparation, since the tomb was (V)nearby, they laid Jesus there.

The Empty Tomb

20 (W)Now on the first day of the week (X)Mary Magdalene *came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and *saw (Y)the stone already removed from the tomb. So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other (Z)disciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “(AA)They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they have put Him.” (AB)So Peter and the other disciple left, and they were going to the tomb. The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead, faster than Peter, and came to the tomb first; and he (AC)stooped to look in, and *saw the (AD)linen wrappings lying there; however he did not go in. So Simon Peter also *came, following him, and he entered the tomb; and he *looked at the linen wrappings lying there, and (AE)the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the (AF)linen wrappings but folded up in a place by itself. So the other disciple who (AG)had first come to the tomb also entered then, and he saw and believed. For (AH)they did not yet understand the Scripture, (AI)that He must rise from the dead. 10 So the disciples went away again (AJ)to their own homes.

11 (AK)But Mary was standing outside the tomb, weeping; so as she wept, she (AL)stooped to look into the tomb; 12 and she *saw (AM)two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13 And they *said to her, “(AN)Woman, why are you weeping?” She *said to them, “Because (AO)they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they put Him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and *(AP)saw Jesus standing there, and yet she (AQ)did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus *said to her, (AR)Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Thinking that He was the gardener, she *said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you put Him, and I will take Him away.” 16 Jesus *said to her, “Mary!” She turned and *said to Him (AS)in [f]Hebrew, “(AT)Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). 17 Jesus *said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to (AU)My brothers and say to them, ‘I am (AV)ascending to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” 18 (AW)Mary Magdalene *came and (AX)announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.
