³ and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”^(A) And they slapped him in the face.^(B)

²⁹ and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.^(A)

¹⁹ Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,^(A) the king of the jews.^{(B) 20} Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,^(C) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. ²¹ The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”^(D)

²² Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

³³ Pilate then went back inside the palace,^(A) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”^(B)

²² When Jesus said this, one of the officials^(A) nearby slapped him in the face.^(B) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.

²⁸ The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

⁴⁹ Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”^(A) and kissed him.
