The Death of Jesus(A)
28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(B) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(C) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(D) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(E) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(F) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(G) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(H) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(I) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(J) 35 The man who saw it(K) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(L) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(M) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[a](N) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[b](O)

28 After(A) this, when Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished(B) that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said, “I’m thirsty!”(C) 29 A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on hyssop[a](D) and held it up to His mouth.
30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!”(E) Then bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.(F)
Jesus’ Side Pierced
31 Since it was the preparation day,(G) the Jews did not want the bodies(H) to remain on the cross(I) on the Sabbath(J) (for that Sabbath was a special[b] day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away.(K) 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him. 33 When they came to Jesus, they did not break His legs since they saw that He was already dead.(L) 34 But one of the soldiers pierced(M) His side(N) with a spear, and at once blood and water(O) came out. 35 He who saw this has testified(P) so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth.(Q) 36 For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled:(R) Not one of His bones will be broken.(S)[c] 37 Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the One they pierced.(T)[d]

28 Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.”[a] 29 A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. 30 When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31 It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn’t want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath (and a very special Sabbath, because it was Passover week). So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus. 33 But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn’t break his legs. 34 One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out. 35 (This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account. He speaks the truth so that you also may continue to believe.[b]) 36 These things happened in fulfillment of the Scriptures that say, “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[c] 37 and “They will look on the one they pierced.”[d]

28 (B)Jesus knew that by now everything had been completed; and in order to make the scripture come true, he said, “I am thirsty.”
29 A bowl was there, full of cheap wine; so a sponge was soaked in the wine, put on a stalk of hyssop, and lifted up to his lips. 30 Jesus drank the wine and said, “It is finished!”
Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Jesus' Side Is Pierced
31 Then the Jewish authorities asked Pilate to allow them to break the legs of the men who had been crucified, and to take the bodies down from the crosses. They requested this because it was Friday, and they did not want the bodies to stay on the crosses on the Sabbath, since the coming Sabbath was especially holy. 32 So the soldiers went and broke the legs of the first man and then of the other man who had been crucified with Jesus. 33 But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they did not break his legs. 34 One of the soldiers, however, plunged his spear into Jesus' side, and at once blood and water poured out. (35 The one who saw this happen has spoken of it, so that you also may believe.[a] What he said is true, and he knows that he speaks the truth.) 36 (C)This was done to make the scripture come true: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 (D)And there is another scripture that says, “People will look at him whom they pierced.”

29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
