John 19:16-20:31

^16 (A)So he ^(B)delivered him over to them to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

So they took Jesus, ¹⁷ and ^(C)he went out, ^(D)bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. ^18 (E)There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. ¹⁹ Pilate ^(F)also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” ²⁰ Many of the Jews read this inscription, for ^(G)the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. ²¹ So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” ²² Pilate answered, ^(H)“What I have written I have written.”

^23 (I)When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.^[a] But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, ²⁴ so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” ^(J)This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,

So the soldiers did these things, ^25 (L)but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. ²⁶ When Jesus saw his mother and ^(M)the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ^(N)“Woman, behold, your son!” ²⁷ Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to ^(O)his own home.

The Death of Jesus

²⁸ After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now ^(P)finished, said (^(Q)to fulfill the Scripture), ^(R)“I thirst.” ²⁹ A jar full of sour wine stood there, ^(S)so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. ³⁰ When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ^(T)“It is finished,” and he bowed his head and ^(U)gave up his spirit.

Jesus' Side Is Pierced

³¹ Since it was ^(V)the day of Preparation, and ^(W)so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was ^(X)a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. ³² So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other ^(Y)who had been crucified with him. ³³ But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. ³⁴ But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out ^(Z)blood and water. ^35 (AA)He who saw it has borne witness—^(AB)his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—^(AC)that you also may believe. ^36 (AD)For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: ^(AE)“Not one of his bones ^(AF)will be broken.” ³⁷ And again another Scripture says, ^(AG)“They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

Jesus Is Buried

^38 (AH)After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly ^(AI)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. ^39 (AJ)Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus^[b] by night, came ^(AK)bringing a mixture of ^(AL)myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds^[c] in weight. ⁴⁰ So they took the body of Jesus and ^(AM)bound it in ^(AN)linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. ⁴¹ Now in the place where he was crucified there was a ^(AO)garden, and ^(AP)in the garden a new tomb ^(AQ)in which no one had yet been laid. ⁴² So because of the Jewish ^(AR)day of Preparation, ^(AS)since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

The Resurrection

20 ^(AT)Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that ^(AU)the stone had been taken away from the tomb. ² So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, ^(AV)the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and ^(AW)we do not know where they have laid him.” ^3 (AX)So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. ⁴ Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. ⁵ And stooping to look in, he saw ^(AY)the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. ⁶ Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, ⁷ and ^(AZ)the face cloth, which had been on Jesus'^[d] head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. ⁸ Then the other disciple, ^(BA)who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; ⁹ for as yet ^(BB)they did not understand the Scripture, ^(BC)that he must rise from the dead. ¹⁰ Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

¹¹ But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. ¹² And ^(BD)she saw ^(BE)two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. ¹³ They said to her, ^(BF)“Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, ^(BG)“They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” ¹⁴ Having said this, she turned around and ^(BH)saw Jesus standing, ^(BI)but she did not know that it was Jesus. ¹⁵ Jesus said to her, ^(BJ)“Woman, why are you weeping? ^(BK)Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be ^(BL)the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” ¹⁶ Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic,^{[e] (BM)}“Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). ¹⁷ Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to ^(BN)my brothers and say to them, ^(BO)‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to ^(BP)my God and your God.’” ¹⁸ Mary Magdalene ^(BQ)went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

^19 (BR)On the evening ^(BS)of that day, the first day of the week, ^(BT)the doors being locked where the disciples were ^(BU)for fear of the Jews,^[f] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ^(BV)“Peace be with you.” ²⁰ When he had said this, ^(BW)he showed them his hands and his side. Then ^(BX)the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. ²¹ Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As ^(BY)the Father has sent me, ^(BZ)even so I am sending you.” ²² And when he had said this, he ^(CA)breathed on them and said to them, ^(CB)“Receive the Holy Spirit. ^23 (CC)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Jesus and Thomas

²⁴ Now ^(CD)Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin,^[g] was not with them when Jesus came. ²⁵ So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, ^(CE)“Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

²⁶ Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. ^(CF)Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ^(CG)“Peace be with you.” ²⁷ Then he said to Thomas, ^(CH)“Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” ²⁸ Thomas answered him, ^(CI)“My Lord and my God!” ²⁹ Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? ^(CJ)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of This Book

^30 (CK)Now Jesus did many other signs ^(CL)in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; ^31 (CM)but these are written so that you may ^(CN)believe that Jesus is the Christ, ^(CO)the Son of God, and that by believing ^(CP)you may have life ^(CQ)in his name.
