Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified^(A)

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.^(B)

¹⁹ and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged^(A) and crucified.^(B) On the third day^(C) he will be raised to life!”^(D)

¹⁶ Therefore, I will punish him^(A) and then release him.”

³³ they will flog him^(A) and kill him.^(B) On the third day^(C) he will rise again.”^(D)

²³ But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed.

¹⁵ Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged,^(A) and handed him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus^(B)

¹⁶ The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace^(C) (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. ¹⁷ They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. ¹⁸ And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”^{(D) 19} Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. ²⁰ And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out^(E) to crucify him.

³³ “We are going up to Jerusalem,”^(A) he said, “and the Son of Man^(B) will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.^(C) They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, ³⁴ who will mock him and spit on him, flog him^(D) and kill him.^(E) Three days later^(F) he will rise.”^(G)
