Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin^(A)

^53 (B)And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were ^(C)assembled all the ^(D)chief priests, the elders, and the scribes.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests, ^[a]the elders, and all the council sought ^(A)false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, ^60 [b]but found none. Even though ^(B)many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last ^(C)two ^[c]false witnesses came forward

⁵⁶ For many bore ^(A)false witness against Him, but their testimonies ^[a]did not agree.

⁵⁷ Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, ⁵⁸ “We heard Him say, ^(B)‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’ ” ⁵⁹ But not even then did their testimony agree.

^60 (C)And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?”

⁶³ But ^(A)Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, ^(B)“I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”

⁶⁴ Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, ^(C)hereafter you will see the Son of Man ^(D)sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

^65 (E)Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His ^(F)blasphemy! ⁶⁶ What do you think?”

They answered and said, ^(G)“He is deserving of death.”
