Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(A)
18 When Jesus had spoken these words, (B)He went out with His disciples over (C)the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. 2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; (D)for Jesus often met there with His disciples. 3 (E)Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, (F)knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”
5 They answered Him, (G)“Jesus [a]of Nazareth.”
Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who (H)betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”
And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” 9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, (I)“Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”
10 (J)Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink (K)the cup which My Father has given Me?”
Before the High Priest
12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And (L)they led Him away to (M)Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of (N)Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 (O)Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was [b]expedient that one man should die for the people.
Peter Denies Jesus(P)
15 (Q)And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did (R)another[c] disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 (S)But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?”
He said, “I am (T)not.”
18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.
Jesus Questioned by the High Priest
19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him, (U)“I spoke openly to the world. I always taught (V)in synagogues and (W)in the temple, where [d]the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask (X)those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”
22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by (Y)struck[e] Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”
23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”
24 (Z)Then Annas sent Him bound to (AA)Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter Denies Twice More
25 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. (AB)Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?”
He denied it and said, “I am not!”
26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied again; and (AC)immediately a rooster crowed.
In Pilate’s Court(AD)
28 (AE)Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. (AF)But they themselves did not go into the [f]Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 29 (AG)Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?”
30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not [g]an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”
31 Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.”
Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 32 (AH)that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, (AI)signifying by what death He would die.
33 (AJ)Then Pilate entered the [h]Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?”
35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?”
36 (AK)Jesus answered, (AL)“My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”
37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”
Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, (AM)that I should bear (AN)witness to the truth. Everyone who (AO)is of the truth (AP)hears My voice.”
38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, (AQ)“I find no fault in Him at all.
Taking the Place of Barabbas(AR)
39 (AS)“But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
40 (AT)Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” (AU)Now Barabbas was a robber.

ਯਿਸੂ ਬੰਦੀ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ(A)
18 ਜਦੋਂ ਯਿਸੂ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਕਰ ਹਟਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਉੱਥੋਂ ਚੱਲਾ ਗਿਆ। ਉਹ ਕਿਦਰੋਨ ਦੀ ਘਾਟੀ ਦੇ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਚੱਲੇ ਗਏ। ਉੱਥੇ ਜੈਤੂਨ ਦੇ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਾਗ ਸੀ। ਯਿਸੂ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚੇਲੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਚੱਲੇ ਗਏ।
2 ਅਤੇ ਯਹੂਦਾ ਇਸ ਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਕਫ਼ ਸੀ, ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਯਿਸੂ ਅਕਸਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਥਾਵੇਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਇੱਕ ਯਹੂਦਾ ਹੀ ਸੀ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਹੱਥੀ ਫ਼ੜਵਾਇਆ ਸੀ। 3 ਫ਼ਿਰ ਯਹੂਦਾ ਉੱਥੇ ਸੈਨਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਜਿੱਥੇਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਇਆ, ਇਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਗੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਜਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਫ਼ਰੀਸੀਆਂ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਪਿਆਦੇ ਵੀ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੀਵੇ, ਮਸ਼ਾਲਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਸਨ।
4 ਯਿਸੂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਕੀ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਯਿਸੂ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਆਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਰਹੇ ਹੋਂ?”
5 ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਨਾਸਰਤ ਦੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ।”
ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਮੈਂ ਹੀ ਯਿਸੂ ਹਾਂ।” ਯਹੂਦਾ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਹੱਥੀ ਫ਼ੜਵਾਇਆ ਸੀ, ਉਹ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਸੀ। 6 ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਮੈਂ ਯਿਸੂ ਹਾਂ” ਉਹ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਿੱਛਾਂਹ ਹਟੇ ਤੇ ਭੁੰਜੇ ਡਿੱਗ ਪਏ।
7 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਤਲਾਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?”
ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਨਾਸਰਤ ਦੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ।”
8 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਹੀ ਯਿਸੂ ਹਾਂ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤਲਾਸ਼ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਤਾਂ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਦਿਉ।” 9 ਇਹ ਯਿਸੂ ਦੀ ਆਖਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਵਾਪਰਿਆ, “ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਗੁਆਇਆ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।”
10 ਫ਼ਿਰ ਸ਼ਮਊਨ ਪਤਰਸ ਕੋਲ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੱਢੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਾਜਕ ਦੇ ਦਾਸ ਤੇ ਚਲਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਸੱਜਾ ਕੰਨ ਵੱਢ ਦਿੱਤਾ। (ਉਸ ਨੌਕਰ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਮਲਖੁਸ ਸੀ।) 11 ਫਿਰ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਪਤਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਆਪਣੀ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਵਾਪਸ ਮਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾ। ਕੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਲਾ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਨਹੀਂ ਪੀਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ?”
ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਨਾਸ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ(B)
12 ਉਸਤੋਂ ਬਾਦ ਸੈਨਾ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਪੈਰੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਫ਼ੜ ਕੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਿਆ। 13 ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਨਾਸ ਅੱਗੇ ਲਿਆਂਦਾ ਗਿਆ। ਅੰਨਾਸ ਕਯਾਫ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਸੌਹਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਸੀ। ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਵਰ੍ਹੇ ਕਯਾਫ਼ਾ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਾਜਕ ਸੀ। 14 ਕਯਾਫ਼ਾ ਉਹ ਸੀ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਲਾਹ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਰਨਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਤਰਸ ਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਨਣ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ(C)
15 ਸ਼ਮਊਨ ਪਤਰਸ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਚੇਲਾ ਯਿਸੂ ਦੇ ਮਗਰ ਹੋ ਤੁਰਿਆ। ਉਹ ਚੇਲਾ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਾਜਕ ਦਾ ਵਾਕਫ਼ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਾਜਕ ਦੇ ਵਿਹੜੇ ਤੀਕ ਗਿਆ। 16 ਪਰ ਪਤਰਸ ਬਾਹਰ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਕੋਲ ਠਹਿਰ ਗਿਆ, ਦੂਜਾ ਚੇਲਾ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਾਜਕ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਸੀ, ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਕੋਲ ਆਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਨੌਕਰਾਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਦੁਆਰਪਾਲ ਸੀ। ਤਦ ਉਹ ਪਤਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਦਰ ਲਿਆਇਆ। 17 ਉਸ ਨੌਕਰਾਨੀ ਨੇ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਤੇ ਪਤਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਕੀ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਆਦਮੀ ਦੇ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈਂ?”
ਪਤਰਸ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ, “ਨਹੀਂ, ਮੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਂ।”
18 ਇਹ ਸਰਦੀ ਦਾ ਮੌਸਮ ਸੀ ਨੌਕਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਅੱਗ ਬਾਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਅੱਗ ਦੇ ਆਲੇ-ਦੁਆਲੇ ਖੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਕੇ ਸੇਕ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਪਤਰਸ ਵੀ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਸੇਕ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ।
ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਾਜਕ ਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਵਾਲ ਕੀਤੇ(D)
19 ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਾਜਕ ਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਅਤੇ, ਜੋ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਮਝਾਏ ਸਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤੇ। 20 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਮੈਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖੁਲ੍ਹੇਆਮ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਹਾਂ। ਮੈਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਇੱਕਤਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਮੈਂ ਕਦੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਪਤ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤੀ। 21 ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸਵਾਲ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ? ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਸਿੱਖਿਆਵਾਂ ਸੁਣੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕੀ ਆਖਿਆ ਹੈ।”
22 ਜਦੋਂ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਆਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਖੜ੍ਹੇ ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਤੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਾਜਕ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ।”
23 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਗਲਤ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਦੱਸ ਮੈਂ ਕੀ ਗਲਤ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਸਹੀ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਕੁੱਟਿਆ ਹੈ?”
24 ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਅੰਨਾਸ ਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਾਜਕ ਕਯਾਫ਼ਾ ਕੋਲ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ।
ਪਤਰਸ ਦਾ ਫ਼ੇਰ ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲਣਾ(E)
25 ਸ਼ਮਊਨ ਪਤਰਸ ਅੱਗ ਕੋਲ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਘਾ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਦੂਜੇ ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਪਤਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਕੀ ਤੂੰ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈਂ?”
ਪਰ ਪਤਰਸ ਨੇ ਹਾਮੀ ਨਾ ਭਰੀ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਨਹੀਂ, ਮੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਂ।”
26 ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜਾਜਕ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਉੱਥੇ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਆਦਮੀ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਸੀ ਜਿਸਦਾ ਪਤਰਸ ਨੇ ਕੰਨ ਵੱਢਿਆ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਕੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਆਦਮੀ (ਯਿਸੂ) ਨਾਲ ਬਾਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਸੀ।”
27 ਪਰ ਫ਼ਿਰ ਪਤਰਸ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਨਹੀਂ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਾਂ!” ਅਤੇ ਉਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਇੱਕ ਕੁੱਕੜ ਨੇ ਬਾਂਗ ਦਿੱਤੀ।
ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਲਾਤੁਸ ਕੋਲ ਲਿਜਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ(F)
28 ਤਦ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਕਯਾਫ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਕਚਿਹਰੀ ਚੋਂ ਕੱਢ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਪਾਲ ਦੇ ਮਹਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੈ ਗਏ। ਅਜੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਵੇਰਾ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਕਚਿਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਏ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਭ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਪਸਾਹ ਦੇ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਦਾ ਭੋਜਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। 29 ਇਸ ਲਈ ਪਿਲਾਤੁਸ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਬਾਹਰ ਆਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਕੀ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋ?”
30 ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਬੁਰਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਏ ਹਾਂ।”
31 ਪਿਲਾਤੁਸ ਨੇ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਜਾਵੋ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸ਼ਰ੍ਹਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਇਸਦਾ ਨਿਆਂ ਕਰੋ।”
ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ, “ਪਰ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਸ਼ਰ੍ਹਾ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।” 32 (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੌਤ ਬਾਰੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਰੇਗਾ, ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਵਾਪਰਿਆ।)
33 ਪਿਲਾਤੁਸ ਮਹਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਾਪਸ ਚੱਲਾ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੋਲ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ, “ਕੀ ਤੂੰ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਰਾਜਾ ਹੈਂ?”
34 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਕੀ ਤੂੰ ਇਹ ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪ ਪੁੱਛ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਦੂਜੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੁਝ ਆਖਿਆ ਹੈ?”
35 ਪਿਲਾਤੁਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਲੋਕ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਜਕ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਲਿਆਏ ਹਨ। ਤੂੰ ਕੀ ਗਲਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ?”
36 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਮੇਰਾ ਰਾਜ ਇਸ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਇਹ ਇਸ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਲੜਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਨਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ। ਪਰ ਮੇਰਾ ਰਾਜ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੈ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।”
37 ਪਿਲਾਤੁਸ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਤੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਰਾਜਾ ਹੈ?”
ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਤੂੰ ਜੋ ਆਖਿਆ ਉਹ ਸੱਚ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਰਾਜਾ ਹਾਂ। ਮੈਂ ਇਸੇ ਲਈ ਜਨਮ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇਸੇ ਕਾਰਣ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਆਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਸਚਿਆਈ ਦੀ ਗਵਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਸੱਕਾਂ। ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੋ ਸਚਿਆਈ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮੇਰੀ ਅਵਾਜ਼ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ।”
38 ਪਿਲਾਤੁਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਸੱਚ ਕੀ ਹੈ?” ਇਹ ਆਖਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਦ ਉਹ ਫ਼ੇਰ ਤੋਂ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਕੋਲ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਇਸ ਆਦਮੀ ਤੇ ਲਾਉਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਦੋਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਿਆ। 39 ਪਰ ਇਹ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਰਿਵਾਜ਼ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਪਸਾਹ ਦੇ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਇੱਕ ਕੈਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਤ ਕਰ ਸੱਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਸੋ ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹੋ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਤ ਕਰ ਦੇਵਾਂ?”
40 ਤਾਂ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਅਵਾਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੀਕੇ, “ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ, ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਬਰੱਬਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਤ ਕਰਦੇ।” ਬਰੱਬਾਸ ਇੱਕ ਡਾਕੂ ਸੀ।

Jesus Is Arrested(A)
18 When Jesus finished ·praying [L saying these things], he went with his ·followers [disciples] across the Kidron Valley [C a deep wadi or ravine separating Jerusalem on the east from the Mount of Olives]. On the other side there was a garden [or grove; C Gethsemane; Matt. 26:36; Mark 14:32], and Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] went into it.
2 Judas knew where this place was, because Jesus met there often with his ·followers [disciples]. Judas was the one who ·turned against [betrayed] Jesus. 3 So Judas came there with a group of soldiers [C Roman] and some guards [C Jewish temple police] from the ·leading [T chief] priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns, and weapons.
4 Knowing everything that would happen to him, Jesus went out and asked, “Who is it you are looking for?”
5 They answered him, “Jesus ·from Nazareth [L the Nazarene].”
“·I am he [L I am; C this may be an allusion to God’s (Yahweh’s) self identification as “I AM” in Ex. 3:14 or to God’s repeated claim that “I am he” throughout Is. 40—55; see John 8:24, 28, 58],” Jesus said. (Judas, the one who ·turned against [betrayed] Jesus, was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “·I am he [L I am; see 18:5],” they moved back and fell to the ground.
7 Jesus asked them again, “Who is it you are looking for?”
They said, “Jesus ·of Nazareth [L the Nazarene].”
8 “I told you that I am he [see 18:5],” Jesus ·said [answered]. “So if you are looking for me, let the others go.” 9 This happened so that the words Jesus said before would ·come true [L be fulfilled]: “I have not lost any of the ones you gave me [6:39; 17:12].”
10 [L Then] Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and struck the ·servant [slave; bond-servant] of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. (The ·servant’s [slave’s; bond-servant’s] name was Malchus.) 11 Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back [L into its sheath]. Shouldn’t I drink the cup the Father gave me?” [C The prophets spoke of a cup of judgment; by dying on the cross Jesus drinks it on our behalf; Jer. 25:15–29.]
Jesus Is Brought Before Annas
12 Then the soldiers [C Roman] with their commander and the guards [C Jewish temple police] arrested Jesus. They tied him 13 and led him first to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who ·told [advised; counseled] the Jews that it would be better if one man died ·for [on behalf of] all the people.
Peter Says He Doesn’t Know Jesus(B)
15 Simon Peter and another one of Jesus’ ·followers [disciples] ·went along after [followed] Jesus. This ·follower [disciple] knew the high priest, so he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard. 16 But Peter waited outside near the ·door [gate]. The ·follower [disciple] who knew the high priest came back outside, spoke to the ·girl at the door [gatekeeper; doorkeeper], and brought Peter inside. 17 The ·girl at the door [gatekeeper; doorkeeper] said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of that man’s ·followers [disciples]?”
Peter answered, “No, I am not!”
18 It was cold, so the ·servants [slaves; bond-servants] and guards [temple police] had built a [charcoal] fire and were standing around it, warming themselves. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
The High Priest Questions Jesus
19 The high priest asked Jesus questions about his ·followers [disciples] and his teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken ·openly [publicly] to ·everyone [L the world]. I have always taught in synagogues and in the Temple, where all the Jews come together. I never said anything in secret. 21 So why do you question me? Ask the people who heard ·my teaching [L what I said to them]. They know what I said.”
22 When Jesus said this, one of the ·guards [officials; temple police] standing there ·hit [slapped] him. The ·guard [official; temple policeman] said, “Is that the way you answer the high priest?”
23 Jesus answered him, “If I said something wrong, then ·show [testify to; witness to] what it was. But if what I said is ·true [right], why do you hit me?”
24 Then Annas sent Jesus, who was still tied, to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter Says Again He Doesn’t Know Jesus(C)
25 As Simon Peter was standing and warming himself, they said to him, “Aren’t you one of that man’s ·followers [disciples]?”
Peter ·said it was not true [denied it]; he said, “No, I am not.”
26 One of the ·servants [slaves; bond-servants] of the high priest was there. This servant was a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off [see 18:10]. The servant said, “Didn’t I see you with him in the ·garden [grove]?”
27 Again Peter ·said it wasn’t true [denied it]. At once ·a rooster [T the cock] crowed.
Jesus Is Brought Before Pilate(D)
28 Early in the morning they [C the Jewish leaders] led Jesus from Caiaphas’s house to the ·Roman governor’s palace [or governor’s headquarters; L Praetorium]. They would not go inside the ·palace [L Praetorium], because they did not want to make themselves ·unclean [C according to early Jewish sources a Jew who entered the house of a Gentile would become ritually unclean]; they wanted to eat the Passover meal. 29 So Pilate [C Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea from ad 26 to 37] went outside to them and asked, “What ·charges [accusation] do you bring against this man?”
30 They answered, “If he were not a ·criminal [L evildoer], we wouldn’t have brought him to you.”
31 Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”
“But ·we are not allowed [it is not legal for us] to put anyone to death,” the Jews answered. [C The Jewish people had to concede the authority for capital punishment to their Roman occupiers.] 32 (This happened so that what Jesus said about how he would die [C by crucifixion rather than stoning] would ·come true [L be fulfilled; see 12:32–33].)
33 Then Pilate went back inside the ·palace [headquarters; L Praetorium] and called Jesus to him and asked, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34 Jesus ·said [answered], “Is that your own question, or did others tell you about me?”
35 Pilate answered, “·I am not one of you [L Am I a Jew?]. It was your own ·people [nation] and their ·leading [T chief] priests who ·handed you over [or betrayed you] to me. What have you done wrong?”
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom ·does not belong to [T is not of] this world. If it belonged to this world, my servants would have fought to keep me from being ·given over [betrayed; handed over] to the ·Jewish leaders [L Jews]. But my kingdom is from another place.”
37 Pilate said, “So you are a king!”
Jesus answered, “You are the one saying I am a king. This is why I was born and came into the world: to ·tell people [testify/witness to] the truth. And everyone ·who belongs to the [on the side of] truth ·listens to me [L hears my voice].”
38 Pilate said, “What is truth?” After he said this, he went out to the ·crowd [L Jews] again and said to them, “I find ·nothing [no case; no basis for a charge] against this man. 39 But it is your custom that I ·free [release] one prisoner to you at Passover time. Do you want me to ·free [release] the ‘king of the Jews’?”
40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Let Barabbas ·go free [be released]!” (Barabbas was a ·robber [bandit; revolutionary; terrorist; C the Romans referred to insurrectionists as “robbers” or “criminals”].)
