18 After Yeshua had said all this, he went out with his talmidim across the stream that flows in winter through the Vadi Kidron, to a spot where there was a grove of trees; and he and his talmidim went into it. 2 Now Y’hudah, who was betraying him, also knew the place; because Yeshua had often met there with his talmidim. 3 So Y’hudah went there, taking with him a detachment of Roman soldiers and some Temple guards provided by the head cohanim and the P’rushim; they carried weapons, lanterns and torches. 4 Yeshua, who knew everything that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Whom do you want?” 5 “Yeshua from Natzeret,” they answered. He said to them, “I AM.” Also standing with them was Y’hudah, the one who was betraying him. 6 When he said, “I AM,” they went backward from him and fell to the ground. 7 So he inquired of them once more, “Whom do you want?” and they said, “Yeshua from Natzeret.” 8 “I told you, ‘I AM,’” answered Yeshua, “so if I’m the one you want, let these others go.” 9 This happened so that what he had said might be fulfilled, “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”
10 Then Shim‘on Kefa, who had a sword, drew it and struck the slave of the cohen hagadol, cutting off his right ear; the slave’s name was Melekh. 11 Yeshua said to Kefa, “Put your sword back in its scabbard! This is the cup the Father has given me; am I not to drink it?”
12 So the detachment of Roman soldiers and their captain, together with the Temple Guard of the Judeans, arrested Yeshua, tied him up, 13 and took him first to ‘Anan, the father-in-law of Kayafa, who was cohen gadol that fateful year. 14 (It was Kayafa who had advised the Judeans that it would be good for one man to die on behalf of the people.) 15 Shim‘on Kefa and another talmid followed Yeshua. The second talmid was known to the cohen hagadol, and he went with Yeshua into the courtyard of the cohen hagadol; 16 but Kefa stood outside by the gate. So the other talmid, the one known to the cohen hagadol, went back out and spoke to the woman on duty at the gate, then brought Kefa inside. 17 The woman at the gate said to Kefa, “Aren’t you another of that man’s talmidim?” He said, “No, I’m not.” 18 Now the slaves and guards had lit a fire because it was cold, and they were standing around it warming themselves; Kefa joined them and stood warming himself too.
19 The cohen hagadol questioned Yeshua about his talmidim and about what he taught. 20 Yeshua answered, “I have spoken quite openly to everyone; I have always taught in a synagogue or in the Temple where all Jews meet together, and I have said nothing in secret; 21 so why are you questioning me? Question the ones who heard what I said to them; look, they know what I said.” 22 At these words, one of the guards standing by slapped Yeshua in the face and said, “This is how you talk to the cohen hagadol?” 23 Yeshua answered him, “If I said something wrong, state publicly what was wrong; but if I was right, why are you hitting me?” 24 So ‘Anan sent him, still tied up, to Kayafa the cohen hagadol.
25 Meanwhile, Shim‘on Kefa was standing and warming himself. They said to him, “Aren’t you also one of his talmidim?” He denied it, saying, “No, I am not.” 26 One of the slaves of the cohen hagadol, a relative of the man whose ear Kefa had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you with him in the grove of trees?” 27 So again Kefa denied it, and instantly a rooster crowed.
28 They led Yeshua from Kayafa to the governor’s headquarters. By now it was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters building because they didn’t want to become ritually defiled and thus unable to eat the Pesach meal. 29 So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What charge are you bringing against this man?” 30 They answered, “If he hadn’t done something wrong, we wouldn’t have brought him to you.” 31 Pilate said to them, “You take him and judge him according to your own law.” The Judeans replied, “We don’t have the legal power to put anyone to death.” 32 This was so that what Yeshua had said, about how he was going to die, might be fulfilled.
33 So Pilate went back into the headquarters, called Yeshua and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” 34 Yeshua answered, “Are you asking this on your own, or have other people told you about me?” 35 Pilate replied, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and head cohanim have handed you over to me; what have you done?” 36 Yeshua answered, “My kingship does not derive its authority from this world’s order of things. If it did, my men would have fought to keep me from being arrested by the Judeans. But my kingship does not come from here.” 37 “So then,” Pilate said to him, “You are a king, after all.” Yeshua answered, “You say I am a king. The reason I have been born, the reason I have come into the world, is to bear witness to the truth. Every one who belongs to the truth listens to me.” 38 Pilate asked him, “What is truth?”
Having said this, Pilate went outside again to the Judeans and told them, “I don’t find any case against him. 39 However, you have a custom that at Passover I set one prisoner free. Do you want me to set free for you the ‘king of the Jews’?” 40 But they yelled back, “No, not this man but Bar-Abba!” (Bar-Abba was a revolutionary.)

Prinderea lui Isus
18 După ce a rostit aceste vorbe, Isus a(A) plecat cu ucenicii Săi dincolo de pârâul Chedron(B), unde era o grădină, în care au intrat El şi ucenicii Lui. 2 Iuda, vânzătorul, ştia şi el locul acela, pentru că(C) Isus, de multe ori, Se adunase acolo cu ucenicii Lui. 3 Iuda deci(D) a luat ceata ostaşilor şi pe aprozii trimişi de preoţii cei mai de seamă şi de farisei şi a venit acolo cu felinare, cu făclii şi cu arme. 4 Isus, care ştia tot ce avea să I se întâmple, a mers spre ei şi le-a zis: „Pe cine căutaţi?” 5 Ei I-au răspuns: „Pe Isus din Nazaret!” Isus le-a zis: „Eu sunt!” Iuda, vânzătorul, era şi el cu ei. 6 Când le-a zis Isus: „Eu sunt”, ei s-au dat înapoi şi au căzut la pământ. 7 El i-a întrebat din nou: „Pe cine căutaţi?” „Pe Isus din Nazaret”, I-au zis ei. 8 Isus a răspuns: „V-am spus că Eu sunt. Deci, dacă Mă căutaţi pe Mine, lăsaţi pe aceştia să se ducă.” 9 A zis lucrul acesta ca să se împlinească vorba pe care o spusese: „N-am pierdut pe(E) niciunul din aceia pe care Mi i-ai dat”. 10 Simon Petru(F), care avea o sabie, a scos-o, a lovit pe robul marelui preot şi i-a tăiat urechea dreaptă. Robul acela se numea Malhu. 11 Isus a zis lui Petru: „Bagă-ţi sabia în teacă. Nu voi bea paharul(G)pe care Mi l-a dat Tatăl să-l beau?”
Isus înaintea lui Ana şi Caiafa
12 Ceata ostaşilor, căpitanul lor şi aprozii iudeilor au prins deci pe Isus şi L-au legat. 13 L-au(H) dus întâi la Ana(I), căci el era socrul lui Caiafa, care era mare preot în anul acela. 14 Şi(J) Caiafa era cel ce dăduse iudeilor sfatul acesta: „Este de folos să moară un singur om pentru norod”. 15 Simon Petru(K) mergea după Isus; tot aşa a făcut şi un alt ucenic. Ucenicul acesta era cunoscut de marele preot şi a intrat cu Isus în curtea marelui preot. 16 Petru(L) însă a rămas afară la uşă. Celălalt ucenic, care era cunoscut marelui preot, a ieşit afară, a vorbit cu portăriţa şi a băgat pe Petru înăuntru. 17 Atunci, slujnica, portăriţa, a zis lui Petru: „Nu cumva şi tu eşti unul din ucenicii omului acestuia?” „Nu sunt”, a răspuns el. 18 Robii şi aprozii care erau acolo făcuseră un foc de cărbuni, căci era frig, şi se încălzeau. Petru stătea şi el cu ei şi se încălzea. 19 Marele preot a întrebat pe Isus despre ucenicii Lui şi despre învăţătura Lui. 20 Isus i-a răspuns: „Eu(M) am vorbit lumii pe faţă; totdeauna am învăţat pe norod în sinagogă şi în Templu, unde se adună toţi iudeii, şi n-am spus nimic în ascuns. 21 Pentru ce Mă întrebi pe Mine? Întreabă pe cei ce M-au auzit despre ce le-am vorbit; iată, aceia ştiu ce am spus.” 22 La auzul acestor cuvinte, unul din aprozii care stăteau acolo a(N) dat o palmă lui Isus şi a zis: „Aşa răspunzi marelui preot?” 23 Isus i-a răspuns: „Dacă am vorbit rău, arată ce am spus rău, dar, dacă am vorbit bine, de ce mă baţi?” 24 Ana(O) L-a trimis legat la marele preot Caiafa. 25 Simon Petru stătea acolo şi se încălzea. Ei(P) i-au zis: „Nu cumva eşti şi tu unul din ucenicii Lui?” El s-a lepădat şi a zis: „Nu sunt”. 26 Unul din robii marelui preot, rudă cu acela căruia îi tăiase Petru urechea, a zis: „Nu te-am văzut eu cu El în grădină?” 27 Petru iar s-a lepădat. Şi îndată(Q) a cântat cocoşul.
Isus înaintea lui Pilat
28 Au adus(R) pe Isus de la Caiafa în odaia de judecată. Era dimineaţa. Ei n-au intrat în odaia de judecată, ca să nu se spurce şi să poată mânca Paştele. 29 Pilat deci a ieşit afară la ei şi le-a zis: „Ce pâră aduceţi împotriva omului acestuia?” 30 Drept răspuns, ei i-au zis: „Dacă n-ar fi fost un făcător de rele, nu L-am fi dat noi în mâinile tale”. 31 Atunci, Pilat le-a zis: „Luaţi-L voi şi judecaţi-L după legea voastră”. „Nouă nu ne este îngăduit de Lege să omorâm pe nimeni”, i-au zis iudeii. 32 Aceasta s-a întâmplat ca(S) să se împlinească vorba prin care arătase Isus cu ce moarte avea să moară. 33 Pilat(T) a intrat iarăşi în odaia de judecată, a chemat pe Isus şi I-a zis: „Eşti Tu Împăratul iudeilor?” 34 Isus i-a răspuns: „De la tine însuţi zici lucrul acesta sau ţi l-au spus alţii despre Mine?” 35 Pilat a răspuns: „Eu sunt iudeu? Neamul Tău şi preoţii cei mai de seamă Te-au dat în mâna mea. Ce ai făcut?” 36 „Împărăţia(U) Mea nu este din lumea aceasta”, a răspuns(V) Isus. „Dacă ar fi Împărăţia Mea din lumea aceasta, slujitorii Mei s-ar fi luptat ca să nu fiu dat în mâinile iudeilor, dar, acum, Împărăţia Mea nu este(W) de aici.” 37 „Atunci, un Împărat tot eşti!” I-a zis Pilat. „Da”, a răspuns Isus. „Eu sunt Împărat. Eu pentru aceasta M-am născut şi am venit în lume, ca să mărturisesc despre adevăr. Oricine este din adevăr ascultă glasul Meu.” 38 Pilat I-a zis: „Ce este adevărul?”
Isus şi Baraba
După ce a spus aceste vorbe, a ieşit iarăşi afară la iudei şi le-a zis: „Eu(X) nu găsesc nicio vină în El. 39 Dar(Y), fiindcă voi aveţi obicei să vă slobod pe cineva de Paşte, vreţi să vă slobod pe Împăratul iudeilor?” 40 Atunci(Z), toţi au strigat din nou: „Nu pe El, ci pe Baraba!” Şi Baraba(AA) era un tâlhar.

Jesus Arrested(A)
18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.(B) On the other side there was a garden,(C) and he and his disciples went into it.(D)
2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.(E) 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding(F) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.(G) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,(H) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”(I)
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,”(J) they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”(K)
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[a](L)
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup(M) the Father has given me?”
12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(N) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(O) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(P)
Peter’s First Denial(Q)
15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(R) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(S) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.
He replied, “I am not.”(T)
18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(U) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(V)
The High Priest Questions Jesus(W)
19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(X) or at the temple,(Y) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(Z) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”
22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(AA) nearby slapped him in the face.(AB) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(AC) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(AD) the high priest.
Peter’s Second and Third Denials(AE)
25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(AF) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(AG)
26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(AH) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(AI) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(AJ)
Jesus Before Pilate(AK)
28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(AL) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(AM) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(AN) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”
“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(AO)
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(AP) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AQ)
34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(AR) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(AS) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(AT)
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(AU) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(AV)
38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(AW) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(AX)

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
18 After Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley to a place where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place because Jesus often met there with his disciples.(A) 3 So Judas brought a detachment of soldiers together with police from the chief priests and the Pharisees, and they came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.(B) 4 Then Jesus, knowing all that was to happen to him, came forward and asked them, “Whom are you looking for?”(C) 5 They answered, “Jesus of Nazareth.”[a] Jesus replied, “I am he.”[b] Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus[c] said to them, “I am he,”[d] they stepped back and fell to the ground. 7 Again he asked them, “Whom are you looking for?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”[e](D) 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he.[f] So if you are looking for me, let these people go.” 9 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken, “I did not lose a single one of those whom you gave me.”(E) 10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear. Jesus before the High Priest
12 So the soldiers, their officer, and the Jewish police arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 First they took him to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.(G) 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better to have one person die for the people.(H)
Peter Denies Jesus
15 Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest,(I) 16 but Peter was standing outside at the gate. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the woman who guarded the gate, and brought Peter in. 17 The woman said to Peter, “You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”(J) 18 Now the slaves and the police had made a charcoal fire because it was cold, and they were standing around it and warming themselves. Peter also was standing with them and warming himself.(K)
The High Priest Questions Jesus
19 Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.(L) 20 Jesus answered, “I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I said to them; they know what I said.” 22 When he had said this, one of the police standing nearby struck Jesus on the face, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?”(M) 23 Jesus answered, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong. But if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?”(N) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.(O)
Peter Denies Jesus Again
25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They asked him, “You are not also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”(P) 26 One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”(Q) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment the cock crowed.(R)
Jesus before Pilate
28 Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters. It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters, so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover.(S) 29 So Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They answered, “If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.” 31 Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.” The Jews replied, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death.” 32 (This was to fulfill what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die.)(T)
33 Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”(U) 34 Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” 35 Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom belonged to this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”(V) 37 Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”(W) 38 Pilate asked him, “What is truth?”
Jesus Sentenced to Death
After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no case against him.(X) 39 But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover. Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”(Y) 40 They shouted in reply, “Not this man but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a rebel.(Z)
