Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(A)
18 When Jesus had spoken these words, (B)He went out with His disciples over (C)the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. 2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; (D)for Jesus often met there with His disciples. 3 (E)Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, (F)knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”
5 They answered Him, (G)“Jesus [a]of Nazareth.”
Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who (H)betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”
And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” 9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, (I)“Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”
10 (J)Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink (K)the cup which My Father has given Me?”
Before the High Priest
12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And (L)they led Him away to (M)Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of (N)Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 (O)Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was [b]expedient that one man should die for the people.
Peter Denies Jesus(P)
15 (Q)And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did (R)another[c] disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 (S)But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?”
He said, “I am (T)not.”
18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.
Jesus Questioned by the High Priest
19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him, (U)“I spoke openly to the world. I always taught (V)in synagogues and (W)in the temple, where [d]the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask (X)those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”
22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by (Y)struck[e] Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”
23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”
24 (Z)Then Annas sent Him bound to (AA)Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter Denies Twice More
25 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. (AB)Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?”
He denied it and said, “I am not!”
26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied again; and (AC)immediately a rooster crowed.
In Pilate’s Court(AD)
28 (AE)Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. (AF)But they themselves did not go into the [f]Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 29 (AG)Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?”
30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not [g]an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”
31 Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.”
Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 32 (AH)that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, (AI)signifying by what death He would die.
33 (AJ)Then Pilate entered the [h]Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?”
35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?”
36 (AK)Jesus answered, (AL)“My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”
37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”
Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, (AM)that I should bear (AN)witness to the truth. Everyone who (AO)is of the truth (AP)hears My voice.”
38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, (AQ)“I find no fault in Him at all.
Taking the Place of Barabbas(AR)
39 (AS)“But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
40 (AT)Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” (AU)Now Barabbas was a robber.

18 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3 Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”
5 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
Jesus said to them, “I am he.”
Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When therefore he said to them, “I am he,” they went backward and fell to the ground.
7 Again therefore he asked them, “Who are you looking for?”
They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,” 9 that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, “Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none.”(A)

12 So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and bound him, 13 and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people.
15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest; 16 but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter. 17 Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, “Are you also one of this man’s disciples?”
He said, “I am not.”
18 Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.
19 The high priest therefore asked Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
20 Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, they know the things which I said.”
22 When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, “Do you answer the high priest like that?”
23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?”
24 Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.
25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, “You aren’t also one of his disciples, are you?”
He denied it and said, “I am not.”
26 One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”
27 Peter therefore denied it again, and immediately the rooster crowed.
28 They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn’t enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 29 Pilate therefore went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
30 They answered him, “If this man weren’t an evildoer, we wouldn’t have delivered him up to you.”
31 Pilate therefore said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.”
Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is illegal for us to put anyone to death,” 32 that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.
33 Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered him, “Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?”
35 Pilate answered, “I’m not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?”
36 Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn’t be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here.”
37 Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?”
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no basis for a charge against him. 39 But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
40 Then they all shouted again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.

Jesus blir förrådd och arresterad

18 Sedan Jesus hade slutat be, gick han tillsammans med sina lärjungar ut till andra sidan av Kidrondalen. Där fanns det en trädgård som de gick in i. 2 Men också Judas, han som förrådde honom kände till platsen eftersom Jesus ofta hade varit där med sina lärjungar.
3 Judas tog nu med sig en grupp romerska soldater och en del av översteprästernas och fariseernas män och med brinnande facklor, lyktor och vapen kom de dit.
4 Jesus visste vad som skulle hända med honom och därför gick han fram till dem och frågade: ”Vem söker ni?” 5 De svarade: ”Jesus från Nasaret.” Då sa Jesus: ”Det är jag.”[a]
Också Judas, han som förrådde honom stod där tillsammans med dem. 6 Men när Jesus sa: ”Det är jag”, ryggade de tillbaka och föll till marken.
7 En gång till frågade han dem: ”Vem söker ni?” Och de svarade: ”Jesus från Nasaret.” 8 Då sa Jesus: ”Jag har ju redan sagt er att det är jag. Om det är mig ni söker så låt de andra gå.” 9 Så gick det i uppfyllelse som Jesus sagt: ”Jag har inte förlorat en enda av dem som du har gett mig.”[b]
10 Men Simon Petrus drog det svärd han tagit med sig och högg av högra örat på översteprästens tjänare som hette Malkos. 11 Då sa Jesus till Petrus: ”Stick svärdet i skidan! Skulle jag inte dricka den bägare som Fadern har räckt mig?”
Jesus förhörs av översteprästen Hannas
(Matt 26:57; Mark 14:53-54; Luk 22:54)
12 Officeren med sina soldater och de judiska tempelvakterna grep nu Jesus och band honom. 13 Först tog de med honom till Hannas[c], svärfar till Kajafas, som var överstepräst det året. 14 Det var Kajafas som hade sagt till judarna att det var bäst om en enda människa dog för folket.
Petrus förnekar att han känner Jesus
(Matt 26:69-75; Mark 14:66-72; Luk 22:54-62)
15 Simon Petrus och en annan lärjunge följde efter Jesus. Den lärjungen kände översteprästen och fick därför komma in med Jesus på översteprästens gård. 16 Petrus däremot stod kvar utanför porten. Men den lärjunge som kände översteprästen gick sedan ut och talade med tjänsteflickan som stod vakt vid porten så att Petrus kunde följa med honom in. 17 Flickan i porten frågade då Petrus: ”Är inte du också en lärjunge till den där mannen?” Men Petrus svarade: ”Nej, det är jag inte.”
18 Tjänstefolket och tempelvakterna stod runt en koleld som de hade gjort upp eftersom det var kallt. Petrus ställde sig också där tillsammans med dem och värmde sig.
19 Översteprästen ställde nu frågor till Jesus om hans lärjungar och hans undervisning. 20 Jesus svarade: ”Jag har talat öppet till världen. Jag har hela tiden undervisat i synagogorna och i templet där alla judar samlas. Jag har inte sagt något i hemlighet. 21 Varför frågar du mig då? Fråga dem som har hört vad jag har talat! De vet vad jag har sagt.”
22 När Jesus sa detta, gav en man ur tempelvakten som stod där honom en örfil och sa: ”Ska du svara översteprästen på det sättet?” 23 Men Jesus sa: ”Har jag sagt något fel, så säg vad det var för du slår väl inte en människa för att hon säger något som är rätt?”
24 Hannas skickade sedan Jesus bunden till översteprästen Kajafas.
25 Petrus stod fortfarande vid elden och värmde sig. Och där frågade man honom: ”Är inte du också en av hans lärjungar?” Men Petrus nekade: ”Nej, det är jag inte.”
26 Då sa en av översteprästens tjänare, en släkting till den man som Petrus hade huggit örat av: ”Visst såg jag dig därute i trädgården tillsammans med Jesus?”
27 Men Petrus nekade än en gång. Och i samma stund gol tuppen.
Jesus förhörs av Pilatus
(Matt 27:11-14; Mark 15:2-5; Luk 23:2-5)
28 Tidigt på morgonen fördes Jesus från översteprästen Kajafas till den romerska landshövdingens residens. Men själva stannade de utanför för de ville inte bli orena[d] utan kunna äta påskmåltiden. 29 Pilatus gick därför ut till dem och frågade: ”Vad är det ni anklagar den här mannen för?”
30 De svarade: ”Vi skulle inte ha överlämnat honom till dig om han inte hade varit en brottsling.”
31 Då sa Pilatus: ”Då kan ni döma honom efter er egen lag[e].”
Men judarna sa: ”Vi har ingen rätt att avrätta någon.” 32 Genom detta gick det i uppfyllelse som Jesus sagt när han avslöjade på vilket sätt han skulle dö.[f]
33 Pilatus gick då tillbaka in i residenset och kallade till sig Jesus och frågade: ”Är du judarnas kung?”
34 Jesus svarade: ”Är det du själv som vill veta eller har andra berättat för dig om mig?”
35 Men Pilatus sa: ”Jag är väl ingen jude! Ditt eget folk och översteprästerna har fört dig hit. Vad har du gjort?”
36 Då svarade Jesus: ”Mitt rike är inte av den här världen. Om det hade varit det, hade mina följeslagare kämpat för att jag inte skulle tas till fånga av judarna. Men nu är inte mitt rike härifrån.”
37 Pilatus frågade igen: ”Så du är alltså en kung?”
Jesus svarade: ”Det är du själv som kallar mig kung. Men jag har fötts och kommit hit till världen för att endast vittna om sanningen. Alla som är av sanningen lyssnar till vad jag säger.”
38 Då sa Pilatus: ”Vad är sanning?” Sedan gick han ut till judarna igen och sa: ”Jag finner honom inte skyldig till något.
Jesus skymfas – Pilatus villrådighet
(Matt 27:15-31; Mark 15:6-20; Luk 23:13-25)
39 Men det är sed att jag varje påsk friger en fånge åt er. Vill ni att jag ska släppa judarnas kung?”
40 Men de ropade tillbaka: ”Nej! Inte honom, utan Barabbas!” Men Barabbas var en upprorsmakare[g].
