³² This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.^(A)

¹⁴ Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,^(A) so the Son of Man must be lifted up,^[a](B)

² “As you know, the Passover^(A) is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”

¹⁹ and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged^(A) and crucified.^(B) On the third day^(C) he will be raised to life!”^(D)

³² And I, when I am lifted up^[a] from the earth,^(A) will draw all people to myself.”^{(B) 33} He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.^(C)

³² He will be delivered over to the Gentiles.^(A) They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; ³³ they will flog him^(B) and kill him.^(C) On the third day^(D) he will rise again.”^(E)

²⁸ So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up^[a] the Son of Man,^(A) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.^(B)

³³ “We are going up to Jerusalem,”^(A) he said, “and the Son of Man^(B) will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.^(C) They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,

²³ you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight.^(A) Be sure to bury^(B) it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse.^(C) You must not desecrate^(D) the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.
