^29 (A)So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”

^2 (A)And Pilate asked him, ^(B)“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, ^(C)“You have said so.” ³ And the chief priests accused him of many things. ⁴ And Pilate again asked him, ^(D)“Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” ⁵ But Jesus ^(E)made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

²³ And he said, “Why? ^(A)What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”

² And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man ^(A)misleading our nation and ^(B)forbidding us to give tribute to ^(C)Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, ^(D)a king.” ^3 (E)And Pilate asked him, ^(F)“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, ^(G)“You have said so.”

Jesus Before Pilate

^11 (A)Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you ^(B)the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, ^(C)“You have said so.” ^12 (D)But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. ¹³ Then Pilate said to him, ^(E)“Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” ¹⁴ But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

²⁸ And ^(A)desiring to know the charge for which they were accusing him, I brought him down to their council. ²⁹ I found that he was being accused ^(B)about questions of their law, but ^(C)charged with nothing deserving death or imprisonment. ^30 (D)And when it was disclosed to me ^(E)that there would be a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once, ^(F)ordering his accusers also to state before you what they have against him.”

^16 (A)I answered them that it was not the custom of the Romans to give up anyone ^(B)before the accused met the accusers face to face and had opportunity to make his defense concerning the charge laid against him.
