Chapter 17

The Prayer of Jesus.[a] When Jesus had said this, he raised his eyes to heaven[b] and said, “Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you,(A) [c]just as you gave him authority over all people,(B) so that he may give eternal life to all you gave him. [d]Now this is eternal life,(C) that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do. Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began.(D)

“I revealed your name[e] to those whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, because the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours,(E) 10 and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them.(F) 11 And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are. 12 When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled.(G) 13 But now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely.(H) 14 I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.(I) 15 [f]I do not ask that you take them out of the world(J) but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. 17 Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth.(K) 18 As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world.(L) 19 And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth.

20 “I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.(M) 22 And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am[g] they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world.(N) 25 Righteous Father, the world also does not know you, but I know you, and they know that you sent me.(O) 26 I made known to them your name and I will make it known,[h] that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.”

Footnotes

  1. 17:1–26 Climax of the last discourse(s). Since the sixteenth century, this chapter has been called the “high priestly prayer” of Jesus. He speaks as intercessor, with words addressed directly to the Father and not to the disciples, who supposedly only overhear. Yet the prayer is one of petition, for immediate (Jn 17:6–19) and future (Jn 17:20–21) disciples. Many phrases reminiscent of the Lord’s Prayer occur. Although still in the world (Jn 17:13), Jesus looks on his earthly ministry as a thing of the past (Jn 17:4, 12). Whereas Jesus has up to this time stated that the disciples could follow him (Jn 13:33, 36), now he wishes them to be with him in union with the Father (Jn 17:12–14).
  2. 17:1 The action of looking up to heaven and the address Father are typical of Jesus at prayer; cf. Jn 11:41 and Lk 11:2.
  3. 17:2 Another possible interpretation is to treat the first line of the verse as parenthetical and the second as an appositive to the clause that ends v 1: so that your son may glorify you (just as…all people), so that he may give eternal life….
  4. 17:3 This verse was clearly added in the editing of the gospel as a reflection on the preceding verse; Jesus nowhere else refers to himself as Jesus Christ.
  5. 17:6 I revealed your name: perhaps the name I AM; cf. Jn 8:24, 28, 58; 13:19.
  6. 17:15 Note the resemblance to the petition of the Lord’s Prayer, “deliver us from the evil one.” Both probably refer to the devil rather than to abstract evil.
  7. 17:24 Where I am: Jesus prays for the believers ultimately to join him in heaven. Then they will not see his glory as in a mirror but clearly (2 Cor 3:18; 1 Jn 3:2).
  8. 17:26 I will make it known: through the Advocate.

17 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Footnotes

  1. 17:6 quién eres. Lit. tu nombre; también en v. 26.

17 These things Jesus spake, and when he had cast up his eyes into heaven [and the eyes lifted up to heaven], he said, Father, the hour cometh, clarify thy Son, that thy Son clarify thee.

As thou hast given to him power on each flesh, that all thing that thou hast given to him, he give to them everlasting life.

And this is everlasting life, that they know thee very God alone [that they know thee alone very God], and whom thou hast sent, Jesus Christ.

I have clarified thee on the earth, I have ended the work, that thou hast given to me to do.

And now, Father, clarify thou me at thyself, with the clearness that I had at thee, before the world was made.

I have showed thy name to those men, which thou hast given to me of the world [I have showed thy name to the men, whom thou hast given to me of the world]; they were thine, and thou hast given them to me, and they have kept thy word.

And now they have known, that all things that thou hast given to me, be of thee.

For the words that thou hast given to me, I gave to them; and they have taken, and have known verily, that I went out from thee; and they believed, that thou sentest me.

I pray for them, I pray not for the world, but for them that thou hast given to me, for they be thine.

10 And all my things be thine, and thy things be mine [And all mine things be thine, and thine things be mine]; and I am clarified in them.

11 And now I am not in the world, and these be in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep them in thy name, which thou hast given to me [whom thou hast given to me], that they be one, as we be.

12 While I was with them, I kept them in thy name; those that thou gavest to me, I kept, and none of them perished, but the son of perdition, that the scripture be fulfilled.

13 But now I come to thee, and I speak these things in the world [and these things I speak in the world], that they have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

14 I gave to them thy word, and the world had them in hate; for they be not of the world, as I am not of the world.

15 I pray not, that thou take them away from the world, but that thou keep them from evil.

16 They be not of the world, as I am not of the world.

17 Hallow thou them in truth; thy word is truth.

18 As thou sentest me into the world, also I sent them into the world.

19 And I hallow myself for them, that also they be hallowed in truth.

20 And I pray not only for them, but also for them that shall believe into me by the word of them;

21 that all be one [that all they be one], as thou, Father, in me, and I in thee, that also they in us be one; that the world believe, that thou hast sent me.

22 And I have given to them the clearness, that thou hast given to me, that they be one, as we be one;

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they be ended into one; and that the world know, that thou sentest me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved also me.

24 Father, they which thou hast given to me, I will that where I am, that they be with me, that they see my clearness, that thou hast given to me [Father, I will that and they whom thou hast given to me, be with me where I am, that they see my clearness, which thou hast given to me]; for thou lovedest me before the making of the world.

25 Father, rightfully the world knew thee not [Rightful Father, the world knew not thee], but I knew thee, and these knew, that thou sentest me.

26 And I have made thy name known to them, and shall make known; that the love by which thou hast loved me, be in them, and I in them.
