Jesus Prays for Himself

17 Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said, ‘Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son(A) may glorify you,(B) since you gave him authority over all people,[a](C) so that he may give eternal life(D) to everyone you have given him.(E) This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only(F) true(G) God, and the one you have sent(H) #– #Jesus Christ.(I) I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do. Now, Father,(J) glorify me in your presence with that glory(K) I had with you before the world existed.(L)

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

‘I have revealed your name(M) to the people you gave me(N) from the world.(O) They were yours, you gave them to me,(P) and they have kept your word.(Q) Now they know that everything you have given me is from you, because I have given them the words you gave me.(R) They have received them and have known for certain that I came from you.(S) They have believed that you sent me.

‘I pray[b] for them. I am not praying for the world but for those you have given me,(T) because they are yours. 10 Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine,(U) and I am glorified in them. 11 I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you.(V) Holy(W) Father, protect[c] them by your name(X) that you have given me, so that they may be one(Y) as we are(Z) one. 12 While I was with them, I was protecting them by your name that you have given me. I guarded(AA) them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction,[d] so that the Scripture(AB) may be fulfilled.(AC) 13 Now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy completed in them. 14 I have given them your word. The world hated(AD) them because they are not of the world,(AE) just as I am not of the world.(AF) 15 I am not praying that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.(AG) 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.(AH) 17 Sanctify(AI) them by the truth;(AJ) your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world,(AK) I also have sent them into the world. 19 I sanctify myself for them, so that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 ‘I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their word. 21 May they all be one,(AL) as you, Father, are in me and I am in you.(AM) May they also be[e] in us, so that the world may believe you sent me. 22 I have given them the glory(AN) you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them and you are in me,(AO) so that they may be made completely one, that the world may know you have sent me and have loved(AP) them as you have loved me.(AQ)

24 ‘Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am,(AR) so that they will see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the world’s foundation. 25 Righteous Father, the world has not known you. However, I have known you,(AS) and they have known that you sent me. 26 I made your name(AT) known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love you have loved me with may be in them and I may be in them.’(AU)

17 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

17 1 Christ prayeth that his glory together with his Father’s may be made manifest. 9 He Prayeth for his Apostles,  20 and for all believers.

These [a]things spake Jesus, and lift up his eyes to heaven, and said, [b]Father, that hour is come: glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee,

(A)As thou hast given him power over [c]all flesh, that he should give eternal life to all them that thou hast given him.

And this is life eternal, that they know thee to be the [d]only very God, and whom thou hast sent, Jesus Christ.

I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

And now glorify me, thou Father, with thine own self, with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

[e]I have declared thy Name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: [f]thine they were, and thou [g]gavest them me, and they have kept thy word.

(B)Now they know that all things whatsoever thou hast given me, are of thee.

For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me, and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and have believed that thou hast sent me.

I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me: for they are thine.

10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine, and I am glorified in them.

11 And now am I no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep them in thy Name, even them whom thou hast given me, that they may be [h]one as we are.

12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy Name: those that thou gavest me, have I kept, and none of them is lost, but the child of perdition, that the (C)Scripture might be fulfilled.

13 And now come I to thee, and these things speak I in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

14 I have given them thy word, and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world.

15 [i]I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou keep them from evil.

16 They are not of the world, as I am not of the world.

17 [j]Sanctify them with thy truth: thy word is truth.

18 [k]As thou didst send me into the world, so have I sent them into the world.

19 And for their sakes sanctify I myself, that they also may be sanctified through the [l]truth.

20 [m]I pray not for these alone, but for them also which shall believe in me, through their word,

21 That they all may be one, as thou, O Father, art in me, and I in thee: even that they may be also one in us, that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

22 And the glory that thou gavest me, I have given them, that they may be one, as we are one,

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them as thou hast loved me.

24 (D)Father, I will that they which thou hast given me, be with me even where I am, that they may behold that my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

25 O righteous Father, the world also hath not known thee, but I have known thee, and these have known, that thou hast sent me.

26 [n]And I have declared unto them thy Name, and will declare it, that the love wherewith thou hast loved me, may be in them, and I in them.

  1. John 17:1 Jesus Christ the everlasting high Priest being ready straightway to offer up himself, doth by solemn prayers consecrate himself to God the Father as a sacrifice: and us together with himself. 2. John 17:1 He first declareth, that as he came into the world to the end that the Father might show in him, being apprehended by faith, his glory in saving his elect, so he applied himself to that only: and therefore desireth of the Father, that he would bless the work which he hath finished.
  3. John 17:2 Over all men.
  4. John 17:3 He calleth the Father the only very God, to set him against all false gods, and not to shut out himself and the holy Ghost, For straightway he joineth the knowledge of the Father and the knowledge of himself together, and according to his accustomed manner, setteth forth the whole Godhead in the person of the father: So is the Father alone said to be King, immortal, wise, and dwelling in the light which no man can attain unto, invisible, Rom. 16:17; 1 Tim. 1:17.
  5. John 17:6 First of all he prayeth for those his disciples, by whom he would have the rest to be gathered together, commendeth them unto the Father, (having once rejected the whole company of the reprobate) because he received them of him into his custody, and for that they embracing his doctrine, shall have so many and so mighty enemies, that there is no way for them to be in safety, but by his help only.
  6. John 17:6 He showeth hereby that everlasting election and choice, which was hidden in the good will and pleasure of God, which is the groundwork of our salvation.

  8. John 17:11 He prayeth that his people may peaceably agree and be joined together in one, that as the Godhead is one, so they may be of one mind and one consent together.

  10. John 17:17 That is, make them holy: and that is said to be holy, which is dedicated and made proper to God only.
