Jesus Prays to be Glorified

17 Jesus said these things, and lifting up his eyes to heaven he said, “Father, the hour has come! Glorify your Son, in order that your Son may glorify you— 2 just as you have given him authority over all flesh, in order that he would give eternal life to them—everyone whom you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have glorified you on earth by[a] completing the work that you have given me to do.[b] 5 And now, Father, you glorify me at your side[c] with the glory that I had at your side[d] before the world existed.

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

6 “I have revealed your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours, and you have given them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they understand that all the things that[e] you have given me are from you, 8 because the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they received them[f] and know truly that I have come from you, and they have believed that you have sent me. 9 I am asking on behalf of them. I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you have given me, because they are yours, 10 and all my things are yours, and your things are mine, and I have been glorified in[g] them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, and they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given to me, so that they may be one, just as we are. 12 When I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given to me, and guarded them,[h] and none of them has perished except the son of destruction, in order that the scripture would be fulfilled. 13 And now I am coming to you, and I am saying these things in the world so that they may have my joy completed in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth—your word is truth. 18 Just as you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And for them I sanctify myself, so that they themselves also may be sanctified in the truth.

Jesus Prays for the Unity of Believers

20 “And I do not ask on behalf of these only, but also on behalf of those who believe in me through their word, 21 that they all may be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I am in you, that they also may be in us, in order that the world may believe that you sent me. 22 And the glory that you have given to me, I have given to them, in order that they may be one, just as we are one— 23 I in them, and you in me, in order that they may be completed in one, so that the world may know that you sent me, and you have loved them just as you have loved me.

24 “Father, those whom you have given to me—I want that those also may be with me where I am, in order that they may see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 Righteous Father, although the world does not know you, yet I have known you, and these men have come to know that you sent me. 26 And I made known to them your name, and will make it[i] known, in order that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I may be in them.”

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven(A) and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come.(B) Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.(C) 2 For you granted him authority over all people(D) that he might give eternal life(E) to all those you have given him.(F) 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you,(G) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.(H) 4 I have brought you glory(I) on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.(J) 5 And now, Father, glorify me(K) in your presence with the glory I had with you(L) before the world began.(M)

6 “I have revealed you[a](N) to those whom you gave me(O) out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me(P) and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you,(Q) and they believed that you sent me.(R) 9 I pray for them.(S) I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,(T) for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.(U) And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,(V) and I am coming to you.(W) Holy Father, protect them by the power of[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one(X) as we are one.(Y) 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[c] that name you gave me. None has been lost(Z) except the one doomed to destruction(AA) so that Scripture would be fulfilled.(AB)

13 “I am coming to you now,(AC) but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy(AD) within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them,(AE) for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.(AF) 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.(AG) 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.(AH) 17 Sanctify them by[d] the truth; your word is truth.(AI) 18 As you sent me into the world,(AJ) I have sent them into the world.(AK) 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.(AL)

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one,(AM) Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.(AN) May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.(AO) 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me,(AP) that they may be one as we are one(AQ)— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me(AR) and have loved them(AS) even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me(AT) to be with me where I am,(AU) and to see my glory,(AV) the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.(AW)

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you,(AX) I know you, and they know that you have sent me.(AY) 26 I have made you[e] known to them,(AZ) and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them(BA) and that I myself may be in them.”

17 Derefter så Jesus op mod nattehimlen og sagde: „Far, nu er tiden inde. Ophøj din Søn, så jeg kan ophøje dig. 2 Du har jo givet mig den højeste myndighed over hele menneskeheden, for at jeg kan give evigt liv til alle dem, du har givet mig. 3 Det evige liv er at kende dig, den eneste sande Gud, og den Frelser og Messias, som du har sendt. 4 Jeg har æret dig her på jorden ved at fuldføre den opgave, du har givet mig. 5 Far, ær du nu mig og før mig tilbage til din herlighed—tilbage til den position, jeg havde hos dig, før verden blev skabt.

6 Jeg har åbenbaret, hvem du er, for de mennesker, som du kaldte ud af verden og gav til mig. De var dine, men du gav dem til mig, og de har holdt fast ved dit ord. 7 Nu forstår de, at alt, hvad jeg har, det har jeg fået fra dig, 8 for de ord, jeg har fået fra dig, har jeg givet videre til dem, og de har taget imod dem. De ved nu, at jeg er kommet fra dig, og at du har sendt mig.

9 Jeg går i forbøn for dem, Far. Jeg går ikke i forbøn for verden, men for dem, som du har givet mig, for de tilhører dig. 10 Du og jeg har alt tilfælles, og mine disciple har gjort mig ære. 11 Nu kommer jeg til dig, for jeg skal ikke være i verden længere, men de skal leve i denne verden. Hellige Far, hold din hånd over dem, som du har givet mig. Beskyt dem med den mægtige kraft, som du gav mig, for at de må blive ét, ligesom vi er ét! 12 Så længe jeg var hos dem, beskyttede jeg dem med din kraft. Jeg tog hånd om dem, så ikke en eneste af dem gik fortabt—undtagen ham, der måtte gå fortabt, og på den måde blev Skriften opfyldt.

13 Nu er jeg på vej til dig, og jeg siger det her, mens jeg endnu er på denne jord, for at de må blive fyldt med min glæde. 14 Jeg har indviet dem i dit budskab, og nu hader verden dem, fordi de ikke længere er en del af verden, ligesom jeg ikke er en del af den. 15 Jeg beder dig ikke om at tage dem ud af verden, men om at beskytte dem fra den Ondes angreb. 16 Men de hører ikke til i verden, ligesom jeg ikke hører til i verden. 17 Rens dem gennem dit ord, som er sandheden. 18 Som du sendte mig til verden, sender jeg nu dem til verden. 19 Jeg indvier mig selv til dig, for at også de gennem erkendelsen af sandheden må indvi sig helt til dig.

20 Jeg beder ikke kun for dem, der er her, men også for dem, som i fremtiden kommer til tro på mig gennem deres vidnesbyrd. 21 Jeg beder om, at de alle må blive ét, ligesom du og jeg er ét, så verden kan tro, at du har sendt mig. 22 Den herlighed, du gav mig, har jeg givet videre til dem, for at de kan blive ét, ligesom vi er ét. 23 Når jeg er ét med dem, og du er ét med mig, så er enheden fuldkommen! Så vil verden indse, at du har sendt mig, og at du elsker dem, ligesom du elsker mig.

24 Far, mit ønske er, at de, som du har givet mig, må komme til det sted, hvor jeg tager hen, og at de må se den herlighed, som du har givet mig, fordi du har elsket mig, fra før verden blev til. 25 Retfærdige Far! Selv om verden ikke kender dig, så kender jeg dig, og mine disciple her ved, at du har sendt mig. 26 Jeg har vist dem, hvem du er, og det vil jeg fortsætte med, for at den kærlighed, hvormed du har elsket mig, må være i dem, og jeg må være i dem.”
