Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers

³ We know^(A) that we have come to know him^(B) if we keep his commands.^{(C) 4} Whoever says, “I know him,”^(D) but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.^{(E) 5} But if anyone obeys his word,^(F) love for God^[a] is truly made complete in them.^(G) This is how we know^(H) we are in him: ⁶ Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.^(I)

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

¹⁵ “If you love me, keep my commands.^(A)

²¹ Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.^(A) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,^(B) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

² This is how we know^(A) that we love the children of God:^(B) by loving God and carrying out his commands. ³ In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands.^(C) And his commands are not burdensome,^(D)

³⁴ “A new command^(A) I give you: Love one another.^(B) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.^{(C) 35} By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”^(D)

¹⁸ “‘Do not seek revenge^(A) or bear a grudge^(B) against anyone among your people,^(C) but love your neighbor^(D) as yourself.^(E) I am the Lord.
