⁴ But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them.

The Work of the Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

²⁹ And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur you may believe.

²³ But be alert; I have already told you everything.^(A)

¹² While I was with them, I protected them in your name that^[a] you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost,^[b] so that the scripture might be fulfilled.^{(A) 13} But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves.^[c]

¹⁹ I tell you this now, before it occurs, so that when it does occur you may believe that I am he.^[a](A)

¹⁵ And Jesus said to them, “The wedding attendants cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.^(A)

¹⁹ Jesus said to them, “The wedding attendants cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

²⁵ Take note, I have told you beforehand.

¹⁴ since I know that my death^[a] will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.^(A)

¹⁶ I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”^(A)
