^2 (A)They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming ^(B)that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service.

²² His parents said these things because ^(A)they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he ^(B)would be put out of the synagogue.

^9 (A)“Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things ^[a]contrary to the name of ^(B)Jesus of Nazareth. ^10 (C)This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority ^(D)from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them. ^11 (E)And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

² For I bear them witness ^(A)that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. ³ For they being ignorant of ^(B)God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own ^(C)righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.

^3 (A)“I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city ^(B)at the feet of ^(C)Gamaliel, taught ^(D)according to the strictness of our fathers’ law, and ^(E)was zealous toward God ^(F)as you all are today. ^4 (G)I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,

^28 (A)And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather ^(B)fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in ^[a]hell.

Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs

⁹ When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under ^(A)the altar ^(B)the souls of those who had been slain ^(C)for the word of God and for ^(D)the testimony which they held.

¹⁹ So I said, ‘Lord, ^(A)they know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and ^(B)beat those who believe on You. ^20 (C)And when the blood of Your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by ^(D)consenting ^[a]to his death, and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’ ²¹ Then He said to me, ‘Depart, ^(E)for I will send you far from here to the Gentiles.’ ”
