^19 (A)If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet ^(B)because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

⁴ You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than ^(A)he who is in the world. ^5 (B)They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and ^(C)the world hears them.

¹⁴ I have given them Your word; ^(A)and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, ^(B)just as I am not of the world. ¹⁵ I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but ^(C)that You should keep them from the evil one. ¹⁶ They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

⁴ just as ^(A)He chose us in Him ^(B)before the foundation of the world, that we should ^(C)be holy and without blame before Him in love, ^5 (D)having predestined us to ^(E)adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, ^(F)according to the good pleasure of His will, ⁶ to the praise of the glory of His grace, ^(G)by which He ^[a]made us accepted in ^(H)the Beloved.

^7 (I)In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to ^(J)the riches of His grace ⁸ which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and ^[b]prudence, ^9 (K)having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure ^(L)which He purposed in Himself, ¹⁰ that in the dispensation of ^(M)the fullness of the times ^(N)He might gather together in one ^(O)all things in Christ, ^[c]both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. ^11 (P)In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to ^(Q)the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will,

³ For ^(A)we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. ⁴ But when ^(B)the kindness and the love of ^(C)God our Savior toward man appeared, ^5 (D)not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through ^(E)the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, ^6 (F)whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, ⁷ that having been justified by His grace ^(G)we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

^2 (A)in which you once walked according to the ^[a]course of this world, according to ^(B)the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in ^(C)the sons of disobedience, ^3 (D)among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in ^(E)the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and ^(F)were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

⁴ But God, ^(G)who is rich in mercy, because of His ^(H)great love with which He loved us, ^5 (I)even when we were dead in trespasses, ^(J)made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

^16 (A)You did not choose Me, but I chose you and ^(B)appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father ^(C)in My name He may give you.

¹⁹ We know that we are of God, and ^(A)the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.

²⁰ And we know that the ^(B)Son of God has come and ^(C)has given us an understanding, ^(D)that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. ^(E)This is the true God ^(F)and eternal life.

⁹ But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of ^(A)darkness into His marvelous light; ^10 (B)who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

Living Before the World

¹¹ Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts ^(C)which war against the soul, ^12 (D)having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, ^(E)they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.
