The Hatred of the World

¹⁸^(A)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. ¹⁹^(B)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because ^(C)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. ²⁰Remember the word that I said to you: ^(D)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, ^(E)they will also persecute you. ^(F)If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. ²¹But ^(G)all these things they will do to you ^(H)on account of my name, ^(I)because they do not know him who sent me. ²²If I had not come and spoken to them, ^(J)they would not have been guilty of sin,^[a] but now they have no excuse for their sin. ²³^(K)Whoever hates me hates my Father also. ²⁴^(L)If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, ^(M)they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have ^(N)seen and hated both me and my Father. ²⁵But ^(O)the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ^(P)‘They hated me without a cause.’

Warning Against False Teachers

³^(A)As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not ^(B)to teach any different doctrine, ⁴nor ^(C)to devote themselves to myths and endless ^(D)genealogies, which promote ^(E)speculations rather than the stewardship^[a] from God that is by faith. ⁵The aim of our charge is love ^(F)that issues from a pure heart and ^(G)a good conscience and ^(H)a sincere faith. ⁶Certain persons, by ^(I)swerving from these, have wandered away into ^(J)vain discussion, ⁷desiring to be teachers of the law, ^(K)without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.

Godlessness in the Last Days

3 But understand this, that ^(A)in the last days there will come times of difficulty. ²For people will be ^(B)lovers of self, ^(C)lovers of money, ^(D)proud, ^(E)arrogant, abusive, ^(F)disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, ³^(G)heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, ^(H)not loving good, ⁴treacherous, reckless, ^(I)swollen with conceit, ^(J)lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, ⁵having the appearance of godliness, but ^(K)denying its power. ^(L)Avoid such people. ⁶For among them are ^(M)those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, ⁷always learning and never able to ^(N)arrive at a knowledge of the truth. ⁸Just as ^(O)Jannes and Jambres ^(P)opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, ^(Q)men corrupted in mind and ^(R)disqualified regarding the faith. ⁹But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, ^(S)as was that of those two men.
