The World Hates the Disciples

¹⁸ “If the world hates you,^(A) keep in mind that it hated me first.

¹¹ To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless.^{(A) 12} We work hard with our own hands.^(B) When we are cursed, we bless;^(C) when we are persecuted,^(D) we endure it; ¹³ when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage^(E) of the world—right up to this moment.

¹² In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,^{(A) 13} while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse,^(B) deceiving and being deceived.^(C)

⁴ You adulterous^(A) people,^[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world^(B) means enmity against God?^(C) Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.^(D)
