19 In a little while[a] the world will not see me any longer, but you will see me; because I live, you will live too. 20 You will know at that time[b] that I am in my Father and you are in me and I am in you. 21 The person who has my commandments and obeys[c] them is the one who loves me.[d] The one[e] who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will reveal[f] myself to him.”

22 “Lord,” Judas (not Judas Iscariot)[g] said,[h] “what has happened that you are going to reveal[i] yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus replied,[j] “If anyone loves me, he will obey[k] my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him.[l] 24 The person who does not love me does not obey[m] my words. And the word[n] you hear is not mine, but the Father’s who sent me.

25 “I have spoken these things while staying[o] with you. 26 But the Advocate,[p] the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you[q] everything,[r] and will cause you to remember everything[s] I said to you.

  1. John 14:19 tn Grk “Yet a little while, and.”
  2. John 14:20 tn Grk “will know in that day.”sn At that time could be a reference to the parousia (second coming of Christ). But the statement in 14:19, that the world will not see Jesus, does not fit. It is better to take this as the postresurrection appearances of Jesus to his disciples (which has the advantage of taking in a little while in v. 19 literally).
  3. John 14:21 tn Or “keeps.”
  4. John 14:21 tn Grk “obeys them, that one is the one who loves me.”
  5. John 14:21 tn Grk “And the one.” Here the conjunction καί (kai) has not been translated to improve the English style.
  6. John 14:21 tn Or “will disclose.”
  7. John 14:22 tn Grk “(not Iscariot).” The proper noun (Judas) has been repeated for clarity and smoothness in English style.sn This is a parenthetical comment by the author.
  8. John 14:22 tn Grk “said to him.”
  9. John 14:22 tn Or “disclose.”sn The disciples still expected at this point that Jesus, as Messiah, was going to reveal his identity as such to the world (cf. 7:4).
  10. John 14:23 tn Grk “answered and said to him.”
  11. John 14:23 tn Or “will keep.”
  12. John 14:23 tn Grk “we will come to him and will make our dwelling place with him.” The context here is individual rather than corporate indwelling, so the masculine singular pronoun has been retained throughout v. 23. It is important to note, however, that the pronoun is used generically here and refers equally to men, women, and children.
  13. John 14:24 tn Or “does not keep.”
  14. John 14:24 tn Or “the message.”
  15. John 14:25 tn Or “while remaining” or “while residing.”
  16. John 14:26 tn Or “Helper” or “Counselor”; Grk “Paraclete,” from the Greek word παράκλητος (paraklētos). See the note on the word “Advocate” in v. 16 for a discussion of how this word is translated.
  17. John 14:26 tn Grk “that one will teach you.” The words “that one” have been omitted from the translation since they are redundant in English.
  18. John 14:26 tn Grk “all things.”
  19. John 14:26 tn Grk “all things.”

19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.(A) 21 They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me, and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.”(B) 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.(C) 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words, and the word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me.(D)

25 “I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Advocate,[a] the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have said to you.(E)
