²² Then Judas^(A) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”^(B)

¹³ When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room^(A) where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.^(B)

¹⁶ Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

³ Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;

¹ Jude,^(A) a servant of Jesus Christ^(B) and a brother of James,

To those who have been called,^(C) who are loved in God the Father and kept for^[a] Jesus Christ:^(D)

⁴⁰ but God raised him from the dead^(A) on the third day and caused him to be seen. ⁴¹ He was not seen by all the people,^(B) but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate^(C) and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

⁶⁰ On hearing it, many of his disciples^(A) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”^(B)

⁹ “How can this be?”^(A) Nicodemus asked.

⁴ “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
