The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see me,(A) but you will see me.(B) Because I live, you will live(C) too. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father,(D) you are in me, and I am in you. 21 The one who has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(E) And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father.(F) I also will love him and will reveal myself to him.”
22 Judas(G) (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it you’re going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” (H)
23 Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.(I) 24 The one who doesn’t love me will not keep my words. The word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me.(J)
25 “I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit,(K) whom the Father will send(L) in my name, will teach you all things(M) and remind you of everything I have told you.(N)
Jesus’s Gift of Peace
27 “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.(O) 28 You have heard me tell you, ‘I am going away(P) and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father,(Q) because the Father is greater than I.(R) 29 I have told you now before it happens(S) so that when it does happen you may believe. 30 I will not talk with you much longer, because the ruler of the world(T) is coming. He has no power over me.[a](U) 31 On the contrary, so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do as the Father commanded me.
“Get up; let’s leave this place.
The Vine and the Branches
15 “I am(V) the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 Every branch in me that does not produce fruit he removes,(W) and he prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit. 3 You are already clean(X) because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.(Y) 5 I am the vine; (Z) you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit,(AA) because you can do nothing without me. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside(AB) like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire,(AC) and they are burned.(AD) 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.(AE) 8 My Father is glorified(AF) by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be[b] my disciples.
Christlike Love
9 “As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love.(AG) 10 If you keep my commands you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.(AH)
11 “I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.(AI)
12 “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved(AJ) you. 13 No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life(AK) for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master[c](AL) is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you.(AM) I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask(AN) the Father in my name,(AO) he will give you.(AP)
17 “This is what I command you: Love one another.
