Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

¹⁵ “If you love me, keep my commands.^{(A) 16} And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate^(B) to help you and be with you forever— ¹⁷ the Spirit of truth.^(C) The world cannot accept him,^(D) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be^[a] in you.

¹⁸ I will not leave you as orphans;^(A) I will come to you.^{(B) 19} Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.^(C) Because I live, you also will live.^{(D) 20} On that day^(E) you will realize that I am in my Father,^(F) and you are in me, and I am in you.^(G)

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

¹⁵ “If you love me, keep my commands.^(A)

²¹ Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.^(A) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,^(B) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

²² Then Judas^(C) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”^(D)

²³ Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.^(E) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.^{(F) 24} Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.^(G)

²⁵ “All this I have spoken while still with you. ²⁶ But the Advocate,^(H) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,^(I) will teach you all things^(J) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.^(K)

¹² What we have received is not the spirit^(A) of the world,^(B) but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. ¹³ This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom^(C) but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.^{[a] 14} The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God^(D) but considers them foolishness,^(E) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

²⁷ Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.^(A) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled^(B) and do not be afraid.

²⁸ “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’^(C) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,^(D) for the Father is greater than I.^{(E) 29} I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.^{(F) 30} I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world^(G) is coming. He has no hold over me, ³¹ but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.^(H)

“Come now; let us leave.

Peace and Hope

5 Therefore, since we have been justified^(A) through faith,^(B) we^[a] have peace^(C) with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,^{(D) 2} through whom we have gained access^(E) by faith into this grace in which we now stand.^(F) And we^[b] boast in the hope^(G) of the glory of God.

⁶ Do not be anxious about anything,^(A) but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.^{(B) 7} And the peace of God,^(C) which transcends all understanding,^(D) will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

¹⁴ Since the children have flesh and blood,^(A) he too shared in their humanity^(B) so that by his death he might break the power^(C) of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil^(D)—
