The Way, the Truth, and the Life

14 “Let ^(A)not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. ²In My Father’s house are many ^[a]mansions; if it were not so, ^[b]I would have told you. ^(B)I go to prepare a place for you. ³And if I go and prepare a place for you, ^(C)I will come again and receive you to Myself; that ^(D)where I am, there you may be also. ⁴And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

⁵^(E)Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

⁶Jesus said to him, “I am ^(F)the way, ^(G)the truth, and ^(H)the life. ^(I)No one comes to the Father ^(J)except through Me.

The Father Revealed

⁷^(K)“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”

⁸Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”

⁹Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? ^(L)He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? ¹⁰Do you not believe that ^(M)I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you ^(N)I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. ¹¹Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, ^(O)or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

The Answered Prayer

¹²^(P)“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. ¹³^(Q)And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be ^(R)glorified in the Son. ¹⁴If you ^[c]ask anything in My name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises Another Helper

¹⁵^(S)“If you love Me, ^[d]keep My commandments. ¹⁶And I will pray the Father, and ^(T)He will give you another ^[e]Helper, that He may abide with you forever— ¹⁷^(U)the Spirit of truth, ^(V)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you ^(W)and will be in you. ¹⁸^(X)I will not leave you orphans; ^(Y)I will come to you.

Indwelling of the Father and the Son

¹⁹“A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but ^(Z)you will see Me. ^(AA)Because I live, you will live also. ²⁰At that day you will know that ^(AB)I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. ²¹^(AC)He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and ^[f]manifest Myself to him.”

²²^(AD)Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”

²³Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, ^(AE)and We will come to him and make Our home with him. ²⁴He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and ^(AF)the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

The Gift of His Peace

²⁵“These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. ²⁶But ^(AG)the ^[g]Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will ^(AH)send in My name, ^(AI)He will teach you all things, and bring to your ^(AJ)remembrance all things that I said to you. ²⁷^(AK)Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. ²⁸You have heard Me ^(AL)say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because ^[h]I said, ^(AM)‘I am going to the Father,’ for ^(AN)My Father is greater than I.

²⁹“And ^(AO)now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. ³⁰I will no longer talk much with you, ^(AP)for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has ^(AQ)nothing in Me. ³¹But that the world may know that I love the Father, and ^(AR)as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

The Ways of Life and Death

14 The wise woman builds her house,
But the foolish pulls it down with her hands.

²He who walks in his uprightness fears the Lord,
^(A)But he who is perverse in his ways despises Him.

³In the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride,
^(B)But the lips of the wise will preserve them.

⁴Where no oxen are, the ^[a]trough is clean;
But much increase comes by the strength of an ox.

⁵A ^(C)faithful witness does not lie,
But a false witness will utter ^(D)lies.

⁶A scoffer seeks wisdom and does not find it,
But ^(E)knowledge is easy to him who understands.
⁷Go from the presence of a foolish man,
When you do not perceive in him the lips of ^(F)knowledge.
⁸The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way,
But the folly of fools is deceit.

But among the upright there is favor.

The Law of Liberty

14 Receive^(A) one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. ²For one believes he ^(B)may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. ³Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and ^(C)let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. ⁴^(D)Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.

⁵^(E)One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. ⁶He who ^(F)observes the day, observes it to the Lord; ^[a]and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for ^(G)he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks. ⁷For ^(H)none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. ⁸For if we ^(I)live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. The Law of Love

¹⁴I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus ^(P)that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. ¹⁵Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. ^(Q)Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died. ¹⁶^(R)Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil; ¹⁷^(S)for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and ^(T)peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. ¹⁸For he who serves Christ in ^[e]these things ^(U)is acceptable to God and approved by men.

¹⁹^(V)Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which ^(W)one may ^[f]edify another. ²⁰^(X)Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. ^(Y)All things indeed are pure, ^(Z)but it is evil for the man who eats with ^[g]offense. ²¹It is good neither to eat ^(AA)meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles ^[h]or is offended or is made weak. ²²^[i]Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. ^(AB)Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. ²³But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for ^(AC)whatever is not from faith is ^[j]sin.

Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Timothy’s Faith and Heritage

³I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my ^(C)forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, ⁴greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, ⁵when I call to remembrance ^(D)the ^[b]genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and ^(E)your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. ⁶Therefore I remind you ^(F)to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. ⁷For ^(G)God has not given us a spirit of fear, ^(H)but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Not Ashamed of the Gospel

Be Loyal to the Faith

¹⁵This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. ¹⁶The Lord grant mercy to the ^(U)household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; ¹⁷but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me. ¹⁸The Lord ^(V)grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord ^(W)in that Day—and you know very well how many ways he ^(X)ministered ^[d]to me at Ephesus.
