Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

18 “I am not referring to all of you;(A) I know those I have chosen.(B) But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture:(C) ‘He who shared my bread(D) has turned[a](E) against me.’[b](F)

19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe(G) that I am who I am.(H) 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”(I)

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit(J) and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”(K)

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,(L) was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”(M)

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,(N) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.(O)

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money,(P) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,(Q) or to give something to the poor.(R) 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.(S)

18 I’m not speaking about all of you; I know those I have chosen.(A) But the Scripture(B) must be fulfilled:(C) The one who eats My bread[a] has raised his heel against Me.(D)[b]

19 “I am telling you now before it happens,(E) so that when it does happen you will believe(F) that I am He.(G) 20 I assure you: Whoever receives anyone I send receives Me, and the one who receives(H) Me receives Him who sent Me.”

Judas’s Betrayal Predicted

21 When(I) Jesus had said this, He was troubled in His spirit(J) and testified,(K) “I assure you: One of you will betray Me!”

22 The disciples started looking at one another—uncertain which one He was speaking about. 23 One of His disciples, the one Jesus loved,(L) was reclining close beside Jesus.[c] 24 Simon Peter motioned to him to find out who it was He was talking about. 25 So he leaned back against Jesus and asked Him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus replied, “He’s the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it.”(M) When He had dipped the bread,(N) He gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son.[d] 27 After Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan(O) entered him. Therefore Jesus told him, “What you’re doing, do quickly.”

28 None of those reclining at the table knew why He told him this. 29 Since Judas(P) kept the money-bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival,”(Q) or that he should give something to the poor. 30 After receiving the piece of bread, he went out immediately. And it was night.(R)
