The New Commandment
31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32 If God has been glorified in him,[a] God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33 Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ 34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you cannot follow me now; but you will follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Very truly, I tell you, before the cock crows, you will have denied me three times.

31 Als er nun hinausgegangen war, sprach Jesus: Jetzt ist der Sohn des Menschen verherrlicht, und Gott ist verherrlicht durch ihn[a]!
32 Wenn Gott verherrlicht ist durch ihn, so wird Gott auch ihn verherrlichen durch sich selbst, und er wird ihn sogleich verherrlichen.
33 Kinder[b], nur noch eine kleine Weile bin ich bei euch. Ihr werdet mich suchen, und wie ich zu den Juden sagte: Wohin ich gehe, dorthin könnt ihr nicht kommen!, so sage ich es jetzt auch zu euch.
34 Ein neues Gebot gebe ich euch, dass ihr einander lieben sollt, damit, wie ich euch geliebt habe, auch ihr einander liebt.
35 Daran wird jedermann erkennen, dass ihr meine Jünger seid, wenn ihr Liebe untereinander habt.

31 Quand il fut parti, Jésus dit : Maintenant, la gloire du Fils de l’homme éclate, et Dieu va être glorifié en lui. 32 [Puisque Dieu va être glorifié en lui[a],] Dieu, à son tour, va glorifier le Fils de l’homme en lui-même, et il le fera bientôt. 33 Mes chers enfants, je suis encore avec vous, mais plus pour longtemps. Vous me chercherez ; et ce que j’ai dit à tous, je vous le dis à vous aussi maintenant : vous ne pouvez pas aller là où je vais.
34 Je vous donne un commandement nouveau : Aimez-vous les uns les autres. Oui, comme je vous ai aimés, aimez-vous les uns les autres. 35 A ceci, tous reconnaîtront que vous êtes mes disciples : à l’amour que vous aurez les uns pour les autres.
36 Simon Pierre lui demanda : Seigneur, où vas-tu ?
Jésus lui répondit : Tu ne peux me suivre maintenant là où je vais, mais plus tard tu me suivras.
37 Mais Pierre reprit : Et pourquoi donc, Seigneur, ne puis-je pas te suivre dès maintenant ? Je suis prêt à donner ma vie pour toi !
38 – Tu es prêt à donner ta vie pour moi ? répondit Jésus. Oui, vraiment, je te l’assure : avant que le coq se mette à chanter, tu m’auras renié trois fois.
