The New Command

³¹ When^(A) he had left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man^(B) is glorified, and God is glorified^(C) in him.^{(D) 32} If God is glorified in him,^[a] God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. ³³ Little children, I am with you a little while longer.^(E) You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so now I tell you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’^(F)

³⁴ “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another. ³⁵ By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love^(G) one another.”

¹² “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved^(A) you. ¹³ No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life^(B) for his friends. ¹⁴ You are my friends if you do what I command you. ¹⁵ I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master^[a](C) is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father. ¹⁶ You did not choose me, but I chose you.^(D) I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask^(E) the Father in my name,^(F) he will give you.^(G)

¹⁷ “This is what I command you: Love one another.

²⁵ Therefore, putting away^(A) lying, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor,^[a](B) because we are members of one another. ²⁶ Be angry and do not sin.^[b](C) Don’t let the sun go down on your anger, ²⁷ and don’t give the devil an opportunity. ²⁸ Let the thief no longer steal. Instead, he is to do honest work with his own hands, so that he has something to share^(D) with anyone in need. ²⁹ No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need,^[c] so that it gives grace to those who hear. ³⁰ And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit.^(E) You were sealed by him^[d] for the day of redemption.^{(F) 31} Let all bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander be removed from you, along with all malice. ³² And be kind^(G) and compassionate^(H) to one another, forgiving^(I) one another, just as God also forgave you^[e] in Christ.

5 Therefore, be imitators of God, as dearly loved children, ² and walk in love, as Christ also loved us and gave himself for us,^(J) a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God.

The Wisdom from Above

¹³ Who among you is wise and understanding? By his good conduct he should show that his works are done in the gentleness that comes from wisdom.^{(A) 14} But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and deny the truth.^{(B) 15} Such wisdom does not come down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.^{(C) 16} For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there is disorder and every evil practice. ¹⁷ But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without pretense.^{(D) 18} And the fruit of righteousness^(E) is sown in peace by those who cultivate peace.

Proud or Humble

4 What is the source of wars and fights among you? Don’t they come from your passions^(F) that wage war within you?^{[a] 2} You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and wage war.^[b] You do not have because you do not ask. ³ You ask and don’t receive because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.^(G)

⁴ You adulterous people!^[c] Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the friend of the world becomes the enemy of God.^{(H) 5} Or do you think it’s without reason that the Scripture says: The spirit he made to dwell in us envies intensely?^[d](I)

⁶ But he gives greater grace. Therefore he says:
