²⁹ Since Judas had charge of the money,^(A) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,^(B) or to give something to the poor.^(C)

⁵ “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.^[a]” ⁶ He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag,^(A) he used to help himself to what was put into it.

²⁸ Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work,^(A) doing something useful with their own hands,^(B) that they may have something to share with those in need.^(C)

¹⁰ All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor,^(A) the very thing I had been eager to do all along.

³⁴ You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions.^{(A) 35} In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

13 It was just before the Passover Festival.^(A) Jesus knew that the hour had come^(B) for him to leave this world and go to the Father.^(C) Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
