²³ One of his disciples—the one whom Jesus loved—was reclining close to his heart;^[a](A)

⁷ That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he had taken it off, and jumped into the sea.^(A)

² So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”^(A)

²⁶ When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.”^(A)

Jesus and the Beloved Disciple

²⁰ Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?”^(A)

¹⁶ In his right hand he held seven stars, and from his mouth came a sharp, two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining with full force.^(A)

¹⁷ When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he placed his right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last^{(B) 18} and the Living One. I was dead, and see, I am alive forever and ever, and I have the keys of Death and of Hades.^(C)

³⁶ So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”

⁵ Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,

³ So the sisters sent a message to Jesus,^[a] “Lord, he whom you love is ill.”

²⁴ This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true.^(A)
