¹¹ For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, “Not all of you are clean.”^(A)

²⁶ Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.”^[a] So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.^[b](A)

Jesus Foretells His Betrayal

²¹ After saying this Jesus was troubled in spirit and declared, “Very truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me.”^(A)

¹⁸ I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But it is to fulfill the scripture, ‘The one who ate my bread^[a] has lifted his heel against me.’^(A)

² The devil had already decided^[a] that Judas son of Simon Iscariot would betray Jesus. And during supper^(A)

²⁵ and needed no one to testify about anyone, for he himself knew what was in everyone.^(A)

⁶⁴ But among you there are some who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who were the ones who did not believe and who was the one who would betray him.^{(A) 65} And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.”^(B)

⁶⁶ Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. ⁶⁷ So Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” ⁶⁸ Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. ⁶⁹ We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”^{[a](C) 70} Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? Yet one of you is a devil.”^{(D) 71} He was speaking of Judas son of Simon Iscariot,^[b] for he, though one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

²⁴ The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.” ²⁵ Judas, who betrayed him, said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” He replied, “You have said so.”

¹² While I was with them, I protected them in your name that^[a] you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost,^[b] so that the scripture might be fulfilled.^(A)
