¹¹ For he knew who was going to betray him,^(A) and that was why he said not every one was clean.

²⁶ Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,^(A) the son of Simon Iscariot.

²¹ After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit^(A) and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”^(B)

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

¹⁸ “I am not referring to all of you;^(A) I know those I have chosen.^(B) But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture:^(C) ‘He who shared my bread^(D) has turned^[a](E) against me.’^[b](F)

² The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.^(A)

²⁵ He did not need any testimony about mankind,^(A) for he knew what was in each person.^(B)

⁶⁴ Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known^(A) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.^{(B) 65} He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”^(C)

⁶⁶ From this time many of his disciples^(D) turned back and no longer followed him.

⁶⁷ “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.^(E)

⁶⁸ Simon Peter answered him,^(F) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.^{(G) 69} We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”^(H)

⁷⁰ Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,^(I) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”^{(J) 71} (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,^(K) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)^(L)

²⁴ The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.^(A) But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

²⁵ Then Judas, the one who would betray him,^(B) said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”^(C)

Jesus answered, “You have said so.”
