37 But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they didn’t believe in him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke,

“Lord, who has believed our report?
To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”Isaiah 53:1

39 For this cause they couldn’t believe, for Isaiah said again,

40 “He has blinded their eyes and he hardened their heart,
lest they should see with their eyes,
    and perceive with their heart,
    and would turn,
    and I would heal them.”Isaiah 6:10

41 Isaiah said these things when he saw his glory, and spoke of him. Isaiah 6:1 42 Nevertheless even many of the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they didn’t confess it, so that they wouldn’t be put out of the synagogue, 43 for they loved men’s praise more than God’s praise.

Isaiah’s Prophecies Fulfilled

37 Even though he had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill(A) the word of Isaiah(B) the prophet, who said:[a]

Lord, who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm(C) of the Lord been revealed?[b](D)

39 This is why they were unable to believe, because Isaiah also said:

40 He has blinded(E) their eyes
and hardened their hearts,(F)
so that they would not see with their eyes
or understand with their hearts,
and turn,(G)
and I would heal them.[c](H)

41 Isaiah said these things because[d] he saw his glory(I) and spoke about him.

42 Nevertheless, many did believe in him even among the rulers,(J) but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, so that they would not be banned from the synagogue. 43 For they loved human praise(K) more than praise from God.(L)
