⁸ You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”^(A)

¹¹ Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, ‘Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land.’^(A)

⁷ For you always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you wish, but you will not always have me.^(A)

³³ Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’^(A)

³⁵ Jesus said to them, “The light is in you^[a] for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. If you walk in the darkness, you do not know where you are going.

¹¹ For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.^(A)

⁹ When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.^{(A) 10} While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them.^{(B) 11} They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”^(C)

Jesus Foretells His Death

²¹ Again he said to them, “I am going away, and you will search for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”^(A)

⁵ But now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’^{(A) 6} But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. ⁷ Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate^[a] will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you.
