³⁶ While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light.”

The Unbelief of the People

After Jesus had said this, he departed and hid from them.^(A)

⁸ for once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Walk as children of light,^(A)

⁵ for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness.

⁴⁷ For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,

⁴⁸ When the gentiles heard this, they were glad and praised the word of the Lord, and as many as had been destined for eternal life became believers.

⁵⁹ So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.^(A)

⁸ And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly, for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light.^(A)

⁵⁴ Jesus therefore no longer walked about openly among the Jews but went from there to a town called Ephraim in the region near the wilderness, and he remained there with the disciples.^(A)

³⁹ Then they tried to arrest him again, but he escaped from their hands.^(A)

⁴⁰ He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing earlier, and he remained there.

⁷ He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.

The Ingathering of the Dispersed
