²³ Jesus replied to them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man^(A) to be glorified. ²⁴ Truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat^(B) falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces much fruit.^{(C) 25} The one who loves his life will lose it,^(D) and the one who hates^(E) his life^(F) in this world will keep it for eternal life. ²⁶ If anyone serves me, he must follow me. Where I am, there my servant^(G) also will be.^(H) If anyone serves me, the Father will honor^(I) him.

²⁷ “Now my soul is troubled. What should I say—Father, save me^(J) from this hour? But that is why I came to this hour. ²⁸ Father, glorify your name.”^[a](K)

Then a voice^(L) came from heaven: ^(M) “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”^(N)

²⁹ The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”

³⁰ Jesus responded, “This voice came, not for me, but for you.^{(O) 31} Now is the judgment of this world.^(P) Now the ruler of this world^(Q) will be cast out.^{(R) 32} As for me, if I am lifted up^[b] from the earth I will draw all people to myself.”^{(S) 33} He said this to indicate what kind of death he was about to die.^(T)

³⁴ Then the crowd replied to him, “We have heard from the law that the Messiah will remain forever.^(U) So how can you say, ‘The Son of Man^(V) must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”

³⁵ Jesus answered, “The light will be with you only a little longer.^(W) Walk while you have the light^(X) so that darkness doesn’t overtake you.^(Y) The one who walks in darkness doesn’t know where he’s going.^{(Z) 36} While you have the light,^(AA) believe in the light so that you may become children of light.” Jesus said this, then went away and hid from them.^(AB)

⁵ For you are all children of light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness.^(A)

⁹ But you are a chosen race,^[a][b](A) a royal priesthood,^[c](B) a holy nation,^[d](C) a people for his possession,^[e](D) so that you may proclaim the praises^[f][g](E) of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.^{(F) 10} Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; you had not received mercy,^(G) but now you have received mercy.

Fellowship with God

⁵ This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light,^(A) and there is absolutely no darkness in him.^{(B) 6} If we say, “We have fellowship^(C) with him,” and yet we walk in darkness,^(D) we are lying and are not practicing the truth.^{(E) 7} If we walk in the light^(F) as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus^(G) his Son cleanses us from all sin. ⁸ If we say, “We have no sin,”^(H) we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive^(I) us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make him a liar, and his word^(J) is not in us.^(K)

⁸ Yet I am writing you a new command, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away^(A) and the true light^(B) is already shining.^{(C) 9} The one who says he is in the light but hates his brother or sister^(D) is in the darkness until now. ¹⁰ The one who loves his brother or sister^(E) remains in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.^{[a] 11} But the one who hates his brother or sister^(F) is in the darkness, walks in the darkness,^(G) and doesn’t know where he’s going,^(H) because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
