Jesus Predicts His Crucifixion

²⁰ Now some Greeks were among those who went up to worship at the festival. ²¹ So they came to Philip,^(A) who was from Bethsaida^(B) in Galilee,^(C) and requested of him, “Sir,^(D) we want to see Jesus.” ²² Philip went and told Andrew;^(E) then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

²³ Jesus replied to them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man^(F) to be glorified. ²⁴ Truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat^(G) falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces much fruit.^{(H) 25} The one who loves his life will lose it,^(I) and the one who hates^(J) his life^(K) in this world will keep it for eternal life. ²⁶ If anyone serves me, he must follow me. Where I am, there my servant^(L) also will be.^(M) If anyone serves me, the Father will honor^(N) him.

²⁷ “Now my soul is troubled. What should I say—Father, save me^(O) from this hour? But that is why I came to this hour. ²⁸ Father, glorify your name.”^[a](P)

Then a voice^(Q) came from heaven: ^(R) “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”^(S)

²⁹ The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”

³⁰ Jesus responded, “This voice came, not for me, but for you.^{(T) 31} Now is the judgment of this world.^(U) Now the ruler of this world^(V) will be cast out.^{(W) 32} As for me, if I am lifted up^[b] from the earth I will draw all people to myself.”^{(X) 33} He said this to indicate what kind of death he was about to die.^(Y)

³⁴ Then the crowd replied to him, “We have heard from the law that the Messiah will remain forever.^(Z) So how can you say, ‘The Son of Man^(AA) must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”

³⁵ Jesus answered, “The light will be with you only a little longer.^(AB) Walk while you have the light^(AC) so that darkness doesn’t overtake you.^(AD) The one who walks in darkness doesn’t know where he’s going.^{(AE) 36} While you have the light,^(AF) believe in the light so that you may become children of light.” Jesus said this, then went away and hid from them.^(AG)

Isaiah’s Prophecies Fulfilled

³⁷ Even though he had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him. ³⁸ This was to fulfill^(AH) the word of Isaiah^(AI) the prophet, who said:^[c]

³⁹ This is why they were unable to believe, because Isaiah also said:

⁴¹ Isaiah said these things because^[f] he saw his glory^(AP) and spoke about him.

⁴² Nevertheless, many did believe in him even among the rulers,^(AQ) but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, so that they would not be banned from the synagogue. ⁴³ For they loved human praise^(AR) more than praise from God.^(AS)

A Summary of Jesus’s Mission

⁴⁴ Jesus cried out, “The one who believes in me^(AT) believes not in me, but in him who sent me. ⁴⁵ And the one who sees me sees him^(AU) who sent me. ⁴⁶ I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me would not remain in darkness. ⁴⁷ If anyone hears my words and doesn’t keep^(AV) them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world^(AW) but to save the world.^{(AX) 48} The one who rejects me^(AY) and doesn’t receive my sayings has this as his judge: ^[g] The word I have spoken will judge him on the last day.^{(AZ) 49} For I have not spoken on my own, but the Father^(BA) himself who sent me has given me a command to say everything I have said. ⁵⁰ I know that his command is eternal life.^(BB) So the things that I speak, I speak just as the Father has told me.”^(BC)

The Barren Fig Tree

¹⁸ Early in the morning,^(A) as he was returning to the city, he was hungry. ¹⁹ Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, he went up to it and found nothing on it except leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” At once the fig tree withered.

²⁰ When the disciples saw it, they were amazed and said, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”

²¹ Jesus answered them, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you tell this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be done.^{(B) 22} And if you believe, you will receive^(C) whatever you ask for in prayer.”

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

²³ When he entered the temple,^(D) the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority?” ^(E)

²⁴ Jesus answered them, “I will also ask you one question, and if you answer it for me, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁵ Did John’s baptism come from heaven, or was it of human origin?”

They discussed it among themselves, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ ^{(F) 26} But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we’re afraid of the crowd,^(G) because everyone considers John to be a prophet.”^{(H) 27} So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

The Barren Fig Tree Is Withered

²⁰ Early^(A) in the morning, as they were passing by, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up. ²¹ Then Peter^(B) remembered and said to him, “Rabbi,^(C) look! The fig tree that you cursed^(D) has withered.”

²² Jesus replied to them, “Have faith in God.^{(E) 23} Truly I tell you,^(F) if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt^(G) in his heart, but believes^(H) that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.^{(I) 24} Therefore I tell you, everything you pray^(J) and ask for^(K)—believe that you have received^[a](L) it and it will be yours. ²⁵ And whenever you stand^(M) praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive^(N) him, so that your Father^(O) in heaven^(P) will also forgive^(Q) you your wrongdoing.”^[b]

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

²⁷ They^(R) came again to Jerusalem.^(S) As he was walking in the temple,^(T) the chief priests, the scribes,^(U) and the elders^(V) came ²⁸ and asked him, “By what authority^(W) are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority to do these things?”

²⁹ Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question;^(X) then answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. ³⁰ Was John’s baptism^(Y) from heaven or of human origin? Answer me.”

³¹ They discussed it among themselves: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why didn’t you believe^(Z) him?’ ³² But if we say, ‘Of human origin’”—they were afraid of the crowd, because everyone thought that John was truly a prophet.^{(AA) 33} So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

20 One^(A) day as he was teaching^(B) the people in the temple and proclaiming the good news,^(C) the chief priests and the scribes, with the elders,^(D) came ² and said to him, “Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Who is it who gave you this authority?”

³ He answered them, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me, ⁴ was the baptism of John from heaven or of human origin?”

⁵ They discussed it among themselves: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ ⁶ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people^(E) will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.”^{(F) 7} So they answered that they did not know its origin.

⁸ And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
