² Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served,^(A) while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.

²⁷ For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.^(A)

At the Home of Martha and Mary

³⁸ As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha^(A) opened her home to him. ³⁹ She had a sister called Mary,^(B) who sat at the Lord’s feet^(C) listening to what he said. ⁴⁰ But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care^(D) that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

⁴¹ “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried^(E) and upset about many things, ⁴² but few things are needed—or indeed only one.^[a](F) Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

⁹ Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.^{(A) 10} So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,

³ While he was in Bethany,^(A) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.^(B)

⁴³ When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”^{(A) 44} The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,^(B) and a cloth around his face.^(C)

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

¹² Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid.

³⁷ It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.^(A) Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.^(B)
