² So they gave a dinner for him there. ^(A)Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table.

²⁰ Behold, I stand at the door and ^(A)knock. ^(B)If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, ^(C)I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

²⁷ For who is the greater, ^(A)one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But ^(B)I am among you as the one who serves.

Martha and Mary

³⁸ Now as they went on their way, Jesus^[a] entered a village. And a woman named ^(A)Martha ^(B)welcomed him into her house. ³⁹ And she had a sister called ^(C)Mary, who ^(D)sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. ⁴⁰ But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” ⁴¹ But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are ^(E)anxious and troubled about many things, ⁴² but one thing is necessary.^[b] Mary has chosen ^(F)the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

⁹ When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus^[a] was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, ^(A)whom he had raised from the dead. ^10 (B)So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well,

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

^3 (A)And while he was at ^(B)Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,^[a] as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.

⁴³ When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” ^44 (A)The man who had died came out, ^(B)his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and ^(C)his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

The Parable of the Great Banquet

¹² He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give ^(A)a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers^[a] or your relatives or rich neighbors, ^(B)lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid.

^37 (A)Blessed are those servants^[a] whom the master finds ^(B)awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, ^(C)he will dress himself for service and ^(D)have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.
