Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus

17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(A) 18 Now Bethany(B) was less than two miles[a] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(C) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(D)

21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(E) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(F)

23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(G) at the last day.”(H)

25 Jesus said to her, “I am(I) the resurrection and the life.(J) The one who believes(K) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(L) in me will never die.(M) Do you believe this?”

27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(N) the Son of God,(O) who is to come into the world.”(P)

28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(Q) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(R) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(S) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.

32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(T)

33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(U) in spirit and troubled.(V) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.

“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.

35 Jesus wept.(W)

37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(Y) have kept this man from dying?”(Z)

The Resurrection and the Life

17 When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb(A) four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem(B) (about two miles[a] away). 19 Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. 20 As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him. But Mary remained seated in the house.

21 Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22 Yet even now I know that whatever You ask from God, God will give You.”

23 “Your brother will rise(C) again,” Jesus told her.

24 Martha said, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”(D)

25 Jesus said to her, “I am(E) the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me,(F) even if he dies, will live.(G) 26 Everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die—ever.(H) Do you believe this?”

27 “Yes, Lord,” she told Him, “I believe You are the Messiah,(I) the Son(J) of God, who comes into the world.”(K)

Jesus Shares the Sorrow of Death

28 Having said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”

29 As soon as she heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him.(L) 30 Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha had met Him. 31 The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. So they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb(M) to cry there.

32 When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet(N) and told Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died!”

33 When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, He was angry[b] in His spirit(O) and deeply moved. 34 “Where have you put him?” He asked.

“Lord,” they told Him, “come and see.”

35 Jesus wept.(P)

36 So the Jews said, “See how He loved(Q) him!” 37 But some of them said, “Couldn’t He who opened the blind man’s eyes(R) also have kept this man from dying?”
