The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus
11 Now a certain man was sick: Lazarus of (A)Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister (B)Martha. 2 And it was the Mary who (C)anointed (D)the Lord with [a]ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “(E)Lord, behold, (F)he whom You love is sick.” 4 But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness is not [b]meant for death, but is for (G)the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” 5 (Now Jesus loved (H)Martha and her sister, and Lazarus.) 6 So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was. 7 Then after this He *said to the disciples, “(I)Let’s go to Judea again.” 8 The disciples *said to Him, “(J)Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking (K)to stone You, and yet You are going there again?” 9 Jesus replied, “(L)Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks during the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in [c]him.” 11 This He said, and after this He *said to them, “Our (M)friend Lazarus (N)has fallen asleep; but I am going so that I may awaken him from sleep.” 12 The disciples then said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will [d]come out of it.” 13 Now (O)Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about [e]actual sleep. 14 So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus died, 15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let’s go to him.” 16 (P)Therefore Thomas, who was called [f](Q)Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, so that we may die with Him!”
17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb (R)four days. 18 Now (S)Bethany was near Jerusalem, about [g]fifteen stadia away; 19 and many of (T)the Jews had come to (U)Martha and Mary, (V)to console them about their brother. 20 So then (W)Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but (X)Mary [h]stayed in the house. 21 Martha then said to Jesus, “(Y)Lord, (Z)if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 Even now I know that (AA)whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” 23 Jesus *said to her, “Your brother will rise from the dead.” 24 Martha *said to Him, “(AB)I know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “(AC)I am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in Me will live, even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me (AD)will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have come to believe that You are (AE)the [i]Christ, the Son of God, and [j](AF)He who comes into the world.”
28 When she had said this, she (AG)left and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, “(AH)The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard this, she *got up quickly and came to Him.
30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but (AI)was still at the place where Martha met Him. 31 (AJ)Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were (AK)consoling her, when they saw that Mary had gotten up quickly and left, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 So when Mary came to the place where Jesus was, she saw Him and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “(AL)Lord, (AM)if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and (AN)the Jews who came with her also weeping, He (AO)was deeply moved in spirit and [k](AP)was troubled, 34 and He said, “Where have you laid him?” They *said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus (AQ)wept. 36 So (AR)the Jews were saying, “See how He (AS)loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could this man, who (AT)opened the eyes of the man who was blind, not have also [l]kept this man from dying?”
38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a (AU)cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus *said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him, “Lord, by this time [m]there will be a stench, for he has been dead (AV)four days.” 40 Jesus *said to her, “(AW)Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they removed the (AX)stone. And Jesus (AY)raised His eyes, and said, “(AZ)Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 But I knew that You always hear Me; nevertheless, (BA)because of the [n]people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that (BB)You sent Me.” 43 And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 Out came the man who had died, (BC)bound hand and foot with wrappings, and (BD)his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
45 (BE)Therefore many of the Jews (BF)who came to Mary, and (BG)saw what He had done, believed in Him. 46 But some of them went to the (BH)Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
Conspiracy to Kill Jesus
47 Therefore (BI)the chief priests and the Pharisees (BJ)convened a (BK)council meeting, and they were saying, “What are we [o]doing in regard to the fact that this man is performing many [p](BL)signs? 48 If we let Him go on like this, all the people will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take over both our [q](BM)place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, (BN)Caiaphas, (BO)who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 nor are you taking into account that (BP)it is in your best interest that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish instead.” 51 Now he did not say this [r]on his own, but (BQ)as he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation; 52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also (BR)gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they (BS)planned together to kill Him.
54 Therefore Jesus (BT)no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the region near the wilderness, into a city called (BU)Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.
55 Now (BV)the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country prior to the Passover, (BW)in order to [s]purify themselves. 56 So they (BX)were looking for Jesus, and saying to one another as they stood in the temple area, “What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now (BY)the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might arrest Him.

11 بیت عنیاہ کے شہر میں ایک لعزر نا می آدمی تھا جو بیمار ہوا یہ وہی شہر تھا جہاں مریم اور اس کی بہن مار تھا رہتی تھیں۔ 2 یہ وہی مر یم تھی جس نے خدا وند یسوع پر عطر لگاکر اپنے بالوں سے اس کے پا ؤں پونچھی تھی۔ لعز ر مریم کا بھا ئی تھا جو بیمار تھا۔ 3 مریم اور مارتھا نے یسوع کو یہ پیغام بھیجا تھا کہ“ خداوند تمہا را عزیز دوست لعزر بیمار ہے۔”

9 یسوع نے جواب دیا ، “دن کے بارہ گھنٹے روشنی رہتی ہے اگر کوئی دن کی روشنی میں چلے تو ٹھو کر سے نہیں گرے گا۔ کیوں کہ وہ دنیا کی روشنی دیکھتا ہے۔ 10 لیکن اگر کو ئی رات کوچلے تو وہ ٹھو کر سے گرتا ہے کیوں کہ روشنی نہ ہو نے کی وجہ سے دیکھ نہیں پاتا۔”
11 یہ باتیں کہنے کے بعد یسوع نے کہا ، “ہما را دوست لعزر اس وقت سو رہا ہے۔ لیکن میں وہا ں اسے جگا نے کے لئے جا رہا ہوں۔”
12 شاگردوں نے کہا ، “مگر اے خداوند وہ سو رہا ہے تو وہ اچھا ہو گا۔” 13 یسوع نے اس کی موت کے بارے میں کہا لیکن شاگردوں نے سمجھا کہ فطری نیند کی با بت کہا ہے۔
14 تب یسوع نے صاف طور سے کہا ، “لعزر مرگیا۔” 15 اور میں اس لئے خوش ہوں کہ میں وہاں نہ تھا میں تمہا رے لئے خوش ہوں۔ کیوں کہ اب تم مجھ پر ایمان لا ؤگے “اب ہم اس کے پاس چلیں۔”

17 یسوع بیت عنیاہ پہنچے وہاں جا کر اسے معلوم ہوا کہ لعزر کو مرے ہوئے چار دن ہو گئے اور وہ قبر میں ہے۔ 18 بیت عنیاہ یروشلم سے تقریباً دو میل دور تھا۔ 19 کئی یہودی مریم اور مار تھا کو اسکے بھائی لعزر کی موت کےموقع پر تسلی دینے یروشلم سے آئے تھے۔
20 مارتھا یسوع کے آنے کی خبر سن کر باہر اس سے ملنے گئی لیکن مریم گھر میں رہی۔ 21 مارتھا نے یسوع سے کہا ، “اے خداوند اگر تم یہاں ہو تے تو میرا بھائی نہ مر تا۔ 22 اس کے باوجود میں جانتی ہوں کہ جو کچھ بھی تو خدا سے مانگے گا تو وہ تجھے دے گا۔”
23 یسوع نے کہا ، “تمہا را بھا ئی دوبا رہ زندہ اٹھے گا۔”
24 مارتھا نے کہا، “میں جانتی ہوں کہ میرا بھا ئی زندہ اٹھے گا جب کہ دوسرے لوگ موت کے بعد اٹھا ئے جا ئیں گے۔”
25 یسوع نے اس سے کہا ، “میں ہی حشر ہوں اور زندگی میں ہی ہوں جو لوگ مجھ پر ایمان لا ئیں گے حا لا نکہ وہ مریں گے مگر پھر بھی زندہ رہیں گے۔ 26 اور جو لوگ زندہ رہ کر مجھ پر ایمان لا ئے کیا وہ سچ مچ میں کبھی نہیں مریں گے۔مارتھا کیا تم اس پر ایمان لا ؤگی؟”
27 مارتھا نے جواب دیا ، “ہاں اے خدا وند! میں ایمان لا تی ہوں کہ تم مسیح ہو ، خدا کا بیٹا مسیح جو دنیا میں آنے وا لے تھے۔”
یسوع کا رونا
28 اتنا کہہ کر مارتھا چلی گئی اور اپنی بہن مریم کو اکیلے لیجا کر کہی، “استاد یہاں ہے اور وہ تمہارے بارے میں پو چھ رہے ہیں۔” 29 جب مریم نے سنا تو وہ جلدی سے اٹھ کھڑی ہو ئی اور یسوع سے ملنے چلی گئی۔ 30 یسوع ابھی گاؤں میں نہیں پہونچے تھے وہ ابھی تک اسی مقام پر تھے جہاں مارتھا اسے ملی تھی۔ 31 یہودی جو ابھی تک مریم کے ساتھ گھر میں تھے اور اسکو تسلّی دے رہے تھے انہوں نے دیکھا مریم جلدی سے اٹھی اور گھر کے باہر چلی گئی۔ انہوں نے سمجھا کہ وہ لعزر کی قبر کی طرف جا رہی ہے اور وہاں جاکر روئے گی اسلئے وہ اسکے پیچھے چلے۔ 32 مریم اس مقام تک گئی جہاں یسوع تھے جب اس نے یسوع کو دیکھا، اس کی قدم بوسی کی اور کہا ، “خداوند اگر آپ یہاں ہو تے تو میرا بھا ئی نہ مرتا۔”
33 یسوع نے دیکھا مریم رو رہی تھی اور جو یہودی اسکے ساتھ آئے تھے وہ بھی رو رہے تھے۔ یسوع اپنے دل میں بہت رنجیدہ ہوا وہ پریشان ہو گئے۔ 34 یسوع نے پو چھا ، “تم نے لعزر کو کہاں رکھا ہے؟ ”انہوں نے کہا اے خدا وند! آئیے اور دیکھئے۔
35 یسوع روئے۔
36 یہودیوں نے کہا، “دیکھو!یسوع لعزر کو بہت چاہتا تھا۔”
37 لیکن چند یہودیوں نے کہا، “یسوع نے اندھے کو بینائی دی۔ پھر لعزر کو کچھ نہ کچھ کر کے اس کو مر نے سے کیوں نہیں روکا ؟”
یسوع کا لعزر کو زندہ کرنا
38 یسوع پھر رنجیدہ ہو گئے۔ یسوع لعزر کے قبر پر آیا۔ یہ ایک غار تھا اور پتھر سے ڈھکا ہوا تھا۔ 39 یسوع نے کہا ، “پتھر کو ہٹا ئیے” مارتھا نے کہا، “لیکن اے خدا وند لعزر کو مرے ہو ئے چار دن ہو گئے اور اس سے بد بو آرہی ہے۔” مارتھا مرے ہو ئے لعزر کی بہن تھی۔
40 یسوع نے مارتھا سے کہا ، “یاد کرو میں نے تم سے کیا کہا تھا، میں نے کہا تھا اگر تم ایمان لاؤ گی تو خدا کا جلال دیکھو گی۔”
41 تب انہوں نے غار کے داخلہ کا پتھر ہٹایا تب یسوع نے دیکھ کر کہا ، “اے باپ میں تیرا شکر گزار ہوں کہ تو نے میری سن لی۔ 42 میں جانتا ہوں کہ تو ہمیشہ میری سنتا ہے مگر میں نے یہ اس لئے کہا کہ آس پاس جو لوگ کھڑے ہیں اور وہ ایمان لے آئیں اس بات پر کہ تو نے مجھے بھیجا ہے۔” 43 اتنا کہہ کر یسوع نے بلند آواز سے پکا رے “لعزر باہر نکل آ” 44 مردہ شخص باہر آیا اسکے ہاتھ پاؤں کفن میں لپٹے ہو ئے تھے اسکا چہرہ رومال سے ڈھکا ہوا تھا۔
یسوع نے لوگوں سے کہا ، “اس پر لپٹے ہو ئے کپڑے کو نکالو اور اسے جانے دو۔”
یہودی قائدین کا یسوع کے قتل کا منصوبہ
45 وہاں کئی یہودی تھے جو مریم سے ملنے آئے تھے۔ جنہوں نے یسوع کا کارنامہ دیکھا تو ایمان لا ئے۔ 46 ان میں سے چند یہودی فریسیوں کے پاس گئے اور جو کچھ دیکھا وہ سب کہا۔ 47 تب سردار کاہنوں اور فریسیوں نے صدر عدالت کے لوگوں کو جمع کرکے کہا، “ہمیں کیا کرنا ہوگا یہ آدمی تو کئی معجزے دکھا رہا ہے۔ 48 اگر ہم خاموش رہیں اور اسے اسی طرح کرنے دیں گے تو سب لوگ جو اس پر ایمان لائیں گے پھر روم کے لوگ آکر ہماری قوم اور ہیکل کو تباہ کردینگے۔”
49 ان میں سے کائفا نامی شخص نے جو اس سال اعلیٰ کاہن تھا کہا ، “تم لوگ کچھ نہیں جانتے۔ 50 بہتر ہے کہ تم میں سے ایک آدمی قوم کے واسطے مر جائے نہ کہ ساری قوم ہلاک ہو لیکن تم لوگ یہ نہیں سمجھتے۔”
51 کائفا نے خود نہیں سوچا۔ وہ اس سال اعلیٰ کاہن تھا اور اسی لئے وہ پیشین گوئی کر رہا تھا کہ یسوع یہودی قوم کے لئے مریں گے۔ 52 ہاں یسوع یہودی قوم کے لئے جان دیں گے۔ وہ خدا کے دوسرے فرزندوں کے لئے بھی مریں گے جو ساری دنیا میں بکھرے ہو ئے ہیں۔ وہ ان سبھوں کو جمع کرکے ایک بنانے کے لئے مریں گے۔
53 اس دن سے یہودی سردار نے منصوبہ ترتیب دینا شروع کیا کہ کس طرح یسوع کو قتل کریں۔ 54 اس وجہ سے یسوع اعلانیہ طور پر ان لوگوں کے ساتھ سفر کرنا ترک کیا۔یسوع یروشلم سے روانہ ہو کر ریگستان کے قریب ایک جگہ ٹھہر گئے اسکا نام ا فرائم تھا وہاں یسوع اپنے شاگردوں کے ساتھ ٹھہرے رہے۔
55 ان دنوں یہودیوں کی فسح کی تقریب قریب تھی کئی لوگ فسح سے پہلے یروشلم گئے تا کہ اپنے آپ کو پاک کر لیں۔ 56 لوگ یسوع کو تلاش کر رہے تھے وہ ہیکل میں کھڑے ہو ئے تھے اور آپس میں ایک دوسرے سے پو چھ رہے تھے کہ “تم کیا سمجھتے ہو کیا وہ تقریب پر آئینگے؟” 57 لیکن سردار کاہنوں اور فریسیوں نے یسوع کے متعلق ایک خاص حکم جاری کیا انہوں نے کہا کہ اگر کسی کو پتہ چل جا ئے کہ یسوع کہاں ہے تو اسکی اطلاع دینی چاہئے تا کہ سبھی سردار کا ہن اور فریسی اسکو گرفتار کر سکیں۔
