Jesus Brings Lazarus Back to Life
11 Lazarus, who lived in Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived, was sick. 2 (Mary was the woman who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was the one who was sick.)
3 So the sisters sent a messenger to tell Jesus, “Lord, your close friend is sick.”
4 When Jesus heard the message, he said, “His sickness won’t result in death. Instead, this sickness will bring glory to God so that the Son of God will receive glory through it.”
5 Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus. 6 Yet, when Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days.
7 Then, after the two days, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.”
8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, not long ago the Jews wanted to stone you to death. Do you really want to go back there?”
9 Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day don’t stumble, because they see the light of this world. 10 However, those who walk at night stumble because they have no light in themselves.”
11 After Jesus said this, he told his disciples, “Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, and I’m going to Bethany to wake him.”
12 His disciples said to him, “Lord, if he’s sleeping, he’ll get well.”
13 Jesus meant that Lazarus was dead, but the disciples thought Jesus meant that Lazarus was only sleeping. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 but I’m glad that I wasn’t there so that you can grow in faith. Let’s go to Lazarus.”
16 Thomas, who was called Didymus, said to the rest of the disciples, “Let’s go so that we, too, can die with Jesus.”
17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. 18 (Bethany was near Jerusalem, not quite two miles away.) 19 Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. Mary stayed at home. 21 Martha told Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask him.”
23 Jesus told Martha, “Your brother will come back to life.”
24 Martha answered Jesus, “I know that he’ll come back to life on the last day, when everyone will come back to life.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the one who brings people back to life, and I am life itself. Those who believe in me will live even if they die. 26 Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe that?”
27 Martha said to him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who was expected to come into the world.”
28 After Martha had said this, she went back home and whispered to her sister Mary, “The teacher is here, and he is calling for you.”
29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Jesus. 30 (Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still where Martha had met him.) 31 The Jews who were comforting Mary in the house saw her get up quickly and leave. So they followed her. They thought that she was going to the tomb to cry. 32 When Mary arrived where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33 When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who were crying with her, he was deeply moved and troubled.
34 So Jesus asked, “Where did you put Lazarus?”
They answered him, “Lord, come and see.”
35 Jesus cried. 36 The Jews said, “See how much Jesus loved him.” 37 But some of the Jews asked, “Couldn’t this man who gave a blind man sight keep Lazarus from dying?”
38 Deeply moved again, Jesus went to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone covering the entrance. 39 Jesus said, “Take the stone away.”
Martha, the dead man’s sister, told Jesus, “Lord, there must already be a stench. He’s been dead for four days.”
40 Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believe, you would see God’s glory?” 41 So the stone was moved away from the entrance of the tomb.
Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you for hearing me. 42 I’ve known that you always hear me. However, I’ve said this so that the crowd standing around me will believe that you sent me.” 43 After Jesus had said this, he shouted as loudly as he could, “Lazarus, come out!”
44 The dead man came out. Strips of cloth were wound around his feet and hands, and his face was wrapped with a handkerchief. Jesus told them, “Free Lazarus, and let him go.”
The Jewish Council Plans to Kill Jesus
45 Many Jews who had visited Mary and had seen what Jesus had done believed in him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council. They asked, “What are we doing? This man is performing a lot of miracles. 48 If we let him continue what he’s doing, everyone will believe in him. Then the Romans will take away our position and our nation.”
49 One of them, Caiaphas, who was chief priest that year, told them, “You people don’t know anything. 50 You haven’t even considered this: It is better for one man to die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.”
51 Caiaphas didn’t say this on his own. As chief priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation. 52 He prophesied that Jesus wouldn’t die merely for this nation, but that Jesus would die to bring God’s scattered children together and make them one.
53 From that day on, the Jewish council planned to kill Jesus. 54 So Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews. Instead, he left Bethany and went to the countryside near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 The Jewish Passover was near. Many people came from the countryside to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover. 56 As they stood in the temple courtyard, they looked for Jesus and asked each other, “Do you think that he’ll avoid coming to the festival?” 57 (The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that whoever knew where Jesus was should tell them so that they could arrest him.)

The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(C) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(D) is sick.”
4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(E) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(F)
8 “But Rabbi,”(G) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(H) and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(I) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(J) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(K) but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(L)
14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Then Thomas(M) (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(N) 18 Now Bethany(O) was less than two miles[b] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(P) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(Q)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(R) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(S)
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(T) at the last day.”(U)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am(V) the resurrection and the life.(W) The one who believes(X) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(Y) in me will never die.(Z) Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(AA) the Son of God,(AB) who is to come into the world.”(AC)
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(AD) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(AE) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(AF) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(AG)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(AH) in spirit and troubled.(AI) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35 Jesus wept.(AJ)
36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”(AK)
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(AL) have kept this man from dying?”(AM)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(AN) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(AO) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(AP)
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(AQ) you will see the glory of God?”(AR)
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(AS) and said, “Father,(AT) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(AU) that they may believe that you sent me.”(AV)
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(AW) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(AX) and a cloth around his face.(AY)
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(AZ) and had seen what Jesus did,(BA) believed in him.(BB) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(BC) called a meeting(BD) of the Sanhedrin.(BE)
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(BF) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(BG) who was high priest that year,(BH) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(BI)
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(BJ) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(BK)
54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(BL) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BM) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(BN) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(BO) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

拉撒路之死

8 門徒們說：「拉比，近來猶太人想用石頭砸死你，你還再到那裡去嗎？」
9 耶穌回答：「白天不是有十二個小時嗎？人如果在白天行走，就不會絆倒，因為他看見這世界的光。 10 但人如果在黑夜裡行走，就會絆倒，因為在他裡面沒有光。」 11 耶穌講了這些話，然後對他們說：「我們的朋友拉撒路睡了，我要去叫醒他。」
12 門徒們就對他說：「主啊，他如果是睡著了，就有救了！」
13 其實耶穌說的是拉撒路的死，他們卻以為他說的是睡覺休息。 14 於是耶穌明確地告訴他們：「拉撒路死了！ 15 我為你們歡喜，因為我不在那裡，好使你們可以相信。現在我們到他那裡去吧。」
16 那叫迪杜馬[b]的多馬，對其他門徒說：「我們也去吧，讓我們與主[c]一起死！」
復活與生命
17 耶穌到了，知道拉撒路在墳墓裡已經有四天了。 18 伯大尼離耶路撒冷不遠，約有三公里[d]。 19 許多猶太人到瑪妲和瑪麗亞那裡去，為了她們弟弟的事安慰她們。 20 瑪妲一聽說耶穌來了，就去迎接他。瑪麗亞卻仍然坐在家裡。
21 瑪妲對耶穌說：「主啊，如果你早在這裡，我弟弟就不會死了。 22 不過我知道，即使是現在，你無論向神求什麼，神都將賜給你的。」
23 耶穌對她說：「你弟弟會復活的。」
24 瑪妲說：「我知道在末日復活的時候，他會復活。」
25 耶穌對她說：「我就是復活，我就是生命。信我的人，即使死了，也將要活。 26 所有活著而信我的人絕不會死，直到永遠。你信這話嗎？」
27 瑪妲說：「是的，主啊！我相信你是基督，是神的兒子，就是要到世界上來的那一位。」
耶穌流淚
28 瑪妲說了這[e]話，就回去叫她的妹妹瑪麗亞，悄悄地說：「老師來到這裡，叫你過去。」
29 瑪麗亞一聽，就立即起來，往耶穌那裡去。 30 當時，耶穌還沒有進村子，仍在瑪妲迎接他的地方。 31 那些在瑪麗亞家裡安慰她的猶太人，看見她匆忙起身出去，以為[f]她要到墳墓那裡去哭，就跟著她。
32 瑪麗亞到了耶穌那裡，一看見他，就俯伏在他的腳前，說：「主啊，如果你早在這裡，我弟弟就不會死了。」
33 耶穌看見瑪麗亞在哭，陪她一起來的猶太人也在哭，就靈裡憤怒，內心煩擾。 34 他問：「你們把他安放在哪裡？」
他們回答說：「主啊，請來看。」
35 耶穌流淚了。
36 猶太人就說：「你看，他多麼愛拉撒路！」 37 但是其中有些人說：「這個人既然開了瞎子的眼睛，難道就不能使拉撒路不死嗎？」
使拉撒路復活
38 耶穌自己裡面再次感到憤怒，來到墳墓那裡。那墳墓是個洞穴，有一塊石頭放置在洞口。 39 耶穌吩咐：「把石頭挪開。」
死者的姐姐瑪妲說：「主啊，他已經發臭了，因為是第四天了。」
40 耶穌對她說：「我不是對你說過，你如果信，就會看見神的榮耀嗎？」
41 於是他們把[g]石頭挪開。耶穌向上舉目，說：「父啊，我感謝你，因為你已經垂聽了我。 42 我知道你總是在垂聽我，但我這麼說，是為了這些站在周圍的民眾，好讓他們相信是你差派了我。」 43 耶穌說了這些話，就大聲呼喚：「拉撒路，出來！」 44 那死了的人就出來了；手腳纏著布條，臉上包著頭巾。耶穌對他們說：「解開他，讓他走！」
陰謀殺害耶穌
45 來到瑪麗亞那裡的許多猶太人，看到耶穌所做的事，就信了耶穌。 46 然而，其中有些人到法利賽人那裡去，向他們報告耶穌所行的事。
47 於是祭司長們和法利賽人召集了議會，說：「這個人行了很多神蹟，我們該做什麼呢？ 48 如果任憑他這樣下去，大家都會信他，羅馬人就會來，奪取我們的聖地和國家！」
49 其中有一個人叫該亞法，是當年的大祭司，對他們說：「你們什麼都不懂！ 50 也不想一想，一個人替民眾死，免得全民族滅亡，這對你們[h]是有益處的。」 51 他說這話不是出於自己，只因他是當年的大祭司，就預言了耶穌要替全民族而死； 52 而且不僅是替猶太民族死，也是要把神的那些四散的兒女都召集合一。 53 從那天起，他們就商議要把耶穌殺掉。 54 因此，耶穌不再公開地在猶太人當中行事[i]，而是離開那裡，到曠野附近的地方，進了一個叫以法蓮的城，在那裡與門徒們住下了。
55 猶太人的逾越節快到了。許多人從鄉下上耶路撒冷去，要在節日前潔淨自己。 56 他們尋找耶穌，站在聖殿裡彼此談論說：「你們怎麼看，他絕不會來過節吧？」 57 原來，祭司長們和法利賽人早就下令，如果有人知道耶穌在哪裡，就要報告，好抓住他。
