⁵⁵ Now ^(A)the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and ^(B)many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover ^(C)to purify themselves. ^56 (D)They were looking for^[a] Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” ⁵⁷ Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany

12 Six days before ^(E)the Passover, ^(F)Jesus therefore came to Bethany, ^(G)where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. ² So they gave a dinner for him there. ^(H)Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table.

⁹ The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ¹⁰ “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, If any one of you or of your descendants is unclean through touching a dead body, or is on a long journey, he shall still keep the Passover to the Lord. ^11 (A)In the second month on the fourteenth day at twilight they shall keep it. ^(B)They shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. ^12 (C)They shall leave none of it until the morning, ^(D)nor break any of its bones; ^(E)according to all the statute for the Passover they shall keep it. ¹³ But if anyone who is clean and is not on a journey fails to keep the Passover, ^(F)that person shall be cut off from his people because he did not bring the Lord's ^(G)offering at its appointed time; that man shall bear his sin. ¹⁴ And if a stranger sojourns among you and would keep the Passover to the Lord, according to the statute of the Passover and according to its rule, so shall he do. ^(H)You shall have one statute, both for the sojourner and for the native.”

¹⁷ For there were many in the assembly who had not consecrated themselves. Therefore the Levites had to slaughter the Passover lamb for everyone who was not clean, to consecrate it to the Lord.
