⁴⁸ If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and ^(A)the Romans will come and take away both our ^(B)place and our nation.”

¹² The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not ^(A)believe and be saved.

^15 (A)who killed both the Lord Jesus and ^(B)the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and ^(C)oppose all mankind ^16 (D)by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved—so as always ^(E)to fill up the measure of their sins. But ^(F)wrath has come upon them at last!^[a]

²⁸ saying, ^(A)“We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you ^(B)intend to bring this man's blood upon us.”

⁷ He came as a ^(A)witness, to bear witness about the light, ^(B)that all might believe through him.

²⁸ But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. ²⁹ For behold, ^(A)the days are coming when they will say, ^(B)‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ ^30 (C)Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ ³¹ For ^(D)if they do these things when ^(E)the wood is green, what will happen ^(F)when it is dry?”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of Jerusalem

²⁰ “But ^(A)when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that ^(B)its desolation has come near. ²¹ Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, ²² for these are ^(C)days of ^(D)vengeance, to fulfill ^(E)all that is written. ^23 (F)Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and ^(G)wrath against this people. ²⁴ They will fall by the edge of the sword and ^(H)be led captive among all nations, and ^(I)Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, ^(J)until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

^41 (A)And when he drew near and saw the city, ^(B)he wept over it, ⁴² saying, ^(C)“Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now ^(D)they are hidden from your eyes. ⁴³ For ^(E)the days will come upon you, when your enemies ^(F)will set up a barricade around you and ^(G)surround you and hem you in on every side ^44 (H)and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And ^(I)they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know ^(J)the time of your ^(K)visitation.”

⁵² Woe to you ^(A)lawyers! ^(B)For you have taken away the key of ^(C)knowledge. You ^(D)did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”
