47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council, and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our holy place[a] and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not understand that it is better for you to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed.” 51 He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but to gather into one the dispersed children of God. 53 So from that day on they planned to put him to death.
54 Jesus therefore no longer walked about openly among the Jews, but went from there to a town called Ephraim in the region near the wilderness; and he remained there with the disciples.
55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. 56 They were looking for Jesus and were asking one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? Surely he will not come to the festival, will he?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where Jesus[b] was should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

Perché quest’uomo fa molti segni. 48 Se lo lasciamo fare, tutti crederanno in lui; e i Romani verranno e ci distruggeranno come città[a] e come nazione». 49 Uno di loro, Caiafa, che era sommo sacerdote quell’anno, disse loro: «Voi non capite nulla, 50 e non riflettete come torni a vostro[b] vantaggio che un uomo solo muoia per il popolo e non perisca tutta la nazione». 51 Ora egli non disse questo di suo; ma siccome era sommo sacerdote in quell’anno, profetizzò che Gesù doveva morire per la nazione, 52 e non soltanto per la nazione, ma anche per riunire in uno i figli di Dio dispersi.
53 Da quel giorno dunque deliberarono di farlo morire. 54 Gesù quindi non andava più apertamente tra i Giudei, ma si ritirò nella regione vicina al deserto, in una città chiamata Efraim; e là si trattenne con i [suoi] discepoli.

47 Da versammelten die obersten Priester und die Pharisäer den Hohen Rat und sprachen: Was sollen wir tun? Denn dieser Mensch tut viele Zeichen!
48 Wenn wir ihn so fortfahren lassen, werden alle an ihn glauben; und dann kommen die Römer und nehmen uns das Land und das Volk weg!
49 Einer aber von ihnen, Kajaphas, der in jenem Jahr Hoherpriester war, sprach zu ihnen: Ihr erkennt überhaupt nichts,
50 und ihr bedenkt nicht, dass es für uns besser ist, dass ein Mensch für das Volk stirbt, als dass das ganze Volk zugrunde geht!
51 Dies redete er aber nicht aus sich selbst; sondern weil er in jenem Jahr Hoherpriester war, weissagte er; denn Jesus sollte für das Volk sterben,
52 und nicht für das Volk allein, sondern auch, um die zerstreuten Kinder Gottes in eins zusammenzubringen.
53 Von jenem Tag an beratschlagten sie nun miteinander, um ihn zu töten.
54 Darum ging Jesus nicht mehr öffentlich unter den Juden umher, sondern zog von dort weg in die Gegend nahe bei der Wüste, in eine Stadt namens Ephraim, und hielt sich dort auf mit seinen Jüngern.
55 Es war aber das Passah der Juden nahe. Und viele aus dem ganzen Land gingen vor dem Passah nach Jerusalem hinauf, um sich zu reinigen.
56 Da suchten sie Jesus und sprachen zueinander, als sie im Tempel standen: Was meint ihr, kommt er nicht zu dem Fest?
57 Sowohl die obersten Priester als auch die Pharisäer hatten aber einen Befehl gegeben, dass, wenn jemand wisse, wo er sei, er es anzeigen solle, damit sie ihn ergreifen könnten.

47 Emiatt a főpapok és a farizeusok összehívták a Főtanácsot. Amikor összegyűltek, ezt kérdezték egymástól: „Most mitévők legyünk? Ez az ember tényleg sok csodát tesz! 48 Ha engedjük, hogy ezt folytassa, a végén majd mindenki hinni fog benne! Azután majd jönnek a rómaiak, elveszik tőlünk a Templom és a nép fölötti irányítást!”
49 Akkor Kajafás, a Főtanács egyik tagja, aki abban az évben a főpap volt, ezt mondta: „Nem tudtok ti semmit! 50 Nem értitek, hogy jobb, ha csak egy ember hal meg a nép helyett, mintha az egész nemzet elpusztul?”
51 Ezt azonban nem magától mondta, hanem prófétált, mivel abban az évben ő volt a főpap. Ez a prófécia azt jelentette, hogy Jézusnak meg kell halnia a népért. 52 De nem csak a népért, hanem azért is, hogy Isten szétszéledt gyermekeit összegyűjtse, és eggyé tegye.

47 Alors, les chefs des prêtres et les pharisiens convoquèrent le Grand-Conseil.
– Qu’allons-nous faire ? disaient-ils. Cet homme accomplit trop de signes miraculeux ; 48 si nous le laissons faire de la sorte, tout le monde va croire en lui. Alors les Romains viendront et détruiront notre temple et notre peuple.
49 L’un d’eux, qui s’appelait Caïphe, et qui était grand-prêtre cette année-là, prit la parole : Vous n’y entendez rien, leur dit-il. 50 Vous ne voyez pas qu’il est de votre intérêt qu’un seul homme meure pour le peuple, pour que le peuple ne disparaisse pas tout entier ?
51 Or ce qu’il disait là ne venait pas de lui ; mais il était grand-prêtre cette année-là, et c’est en cette qualité qu’il prophétisa qu’il fallait que Jésus meure pour son peuple. 52 Et ce n’était pas seulement pour son peuple qu’il devait mourir, c’était aussi pour rassembler tous les enfants de Dieu dispersés à travers le monde et les réunir en un seul peuple.
53 C’est ce jour-là qu’ils prirent la décision de faire mourir Jésus. 54 Jésus cessa donc de se montrer en public. Il partit de là et se retira dans la région voisine du désert, dans une ville nommée Ephraïm[a]. Il y passa quelque temps avec ses disciples.
55 Comme la fête de la Pâque approchait, beaucoup de gens de tout le pays montaient à Jérusalem avant la fête pour se soumettre aux cérémonies rituelles de purification. 56 Ils cherchaient donc Jésus et se demandaient entre eux, dans la cour du Temple : Qu’en pensez-vous ? Croyez-vous qu’il viendra à la fête ?
57 Or, les chefs des prêtres et les pharisiens avaient donné des instructions : si quelqu’un savait où se trouvait Jésus, il devait les prévenir pour qu’on l’arrête.
